Definition Humma

Humma according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

The thing for so-and-so, in protection: barring it and warding it. Said: he protected her from the thing, and protected it from the thing. Illness in diet: barring what harms it.

Humma according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

A strange heat, harmful to acts, issuing from the heart to the organs.

Humma according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

A strange heat harmful to acts, issuing from heart to organs, so named for the heat it holds, or what comes of the humma, the sweat, or both being marks of fever, by the hadith: « fever is death’s emissary » (Ibn as-Sunni and Abou Nou’aym in at-Tibb from Anas).
