Definition Ifṭar

Ifṭar according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: the verbal noun of aftara; one says: aftara as-sa'im (the fasting person broke his fast): he entered the time of iftar, and it was permitted for him to eat; belonging to this is the hadith: (When the night comes on from here and the day departs from here, and the sun has set, the fasting person has broken his fast) (Ahmad 1/35). Iftar in technical usage does not go beyond this meaning. (Al-mawsu'a al-fiqhiyya 5/298). Al-af'a: the well-known venomous snake; the majority treated it as indeclinable, like 'iswa and raha; yet the refusal of its declension was reported, because of the verbal pattern it contains and its resemblance to the derivative, which is a depiction of its harmfulness. (Al-matla' p. 363).
