Makhayat according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

Propositions imagined, by which the soul is affected of contraction or expansion, recoiling or desiring, as when said: wine a flowing ruby, the soul expands desiring to drink; and when said: honey bitter and loathsome, the soul contracts recoiling. The syllogism composed of them is called poetry.

Makhayat according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Propositions that, brought to the soul, affect it wondrously of contraction or expansion, as their word: wine a flowing ruby, honey bitter and loathsome. Makhayat according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

Propositions that, arriving at the soul, affect it wondrously of contraction or expansion.

Makhayat according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)
