Definition Milla

Milla according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

It is the revealed law, in that it inclines, or in that a community gathers upon it.

Milla according to Maqalid al-'Ulum (As-Suyuti)

What Allah enjoined upon His messenger’s tongue for His servants, a trust toward His nearness.

Milla according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

What the reason’s guidance reaching from Allah calls to, the tawhid of the people of hanifiyya, mentioned by al-Hourali. Ar-Raghib said: a name of what Allah legislated for His servants upon His prophets’ tongues, that they reach thereby His nearness. Its difference from religion: milla is not annexed to the prophet it rests on, scarce ever found annexed to Allah, nor to a single member of the community, and used only of laws in aggregate, not one.

Milla according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

Passed under religion.
