Sanad according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Lexically: what faces you of the mountain rising above the slope; plural asnad. Whatever one leans on and relies upon, wall or other, is a sanad; hence the name given to the deed of debt. Ibn al-Hajib said: the sanad is the report of the path to the matn. The Sheikh Zakariya al-Ansari said: the sanad is that upon which the prohibition is founded.
