Lexically, with damma: elevation, which Ibn Sa’id specified as height. Some defined it as nobility; said: rank; said: what is long of the building and comely; said: the sign. As a term: some scholars defined it as a distinct set of Quranic verses with a beginning and an end. It is said: « sura »: the completion of an ensemble heard, embracing a full meaning as walls embrace a city. As-sout: the whip of striking, so named for mingling blood with flesh; Allah said: « your Lord poured upon them a whip of chastisement ».
Of building: what is long and comely. The raised part of the building; hence the sura of the Quran, being raised above another, cut off from it; in the noble Quran: « if you are in doubt about what We sent down to Our servant, produce a sura like it and call your witnesses besides Allah, if you are truthful » (al-Baqara 23); plural soubour, soubourat. The high rank. Nobility. The sign.
A portion of the Quran of known beginning and end.
The set of the Quran named by a proper name by prescription, of at least three verses.
