The opposite of the interdiction; tah lil: making a thing licit, that is, permitted, leaving choice between doing and leaving. It may be making the unlawful lawful: declaring licit what is really unlawful, as he who licenses usury. It is applied to pardoning a wrong: in the hadith: « whoever has a claim on his brother, of honour or of goods, let him be quit of him today, before there is neither dinar nor dirham ». It is applied to making lawful the thrice-repudiated wife to her repudiator by a marriage. It is applied to the slaughtering of the beast, that is, by immolation. It is applied to entering the race and wager until the counter-value is made lawful.
It is that the second husband render the thrice-repudiated licit to the first by a valid marriage; and tah lil is also putting its author in a state of licitness.
The opposite of the interdiction. Al-halal: the permitted; hence Allah’s word: « O people, eat of what is on the earth, lawful and good, and follow not the steps of the devil: he is a clear enemy to you » (al-Baqara 168). In the noble hadith: « what Allah made lawful in His Book ». Among the Hanafis: what leaving is not preferred over doing; and: what is not obligatory to do, embracing the permitted, the recommended, the obligatory and the disliked; and: all whose use calls no sanction; and: what the Law declared licit to do. By Ibn Hadjar: what the Lawgiver prescribed seeking, with threat against leaving. Among the Ibadites: what is free in essence of forbidden attributes, and whose causes are free of what leads to fault. Al-hill: the lawful. What passes beyond the sacred. Coming out of consecration. The aim pursued; one says: so-and-so dwelt in such a city. Al-houlla: a two-piece garment, of two cloths of one kind, or a lined cloth; some linguists hold it two new cloths. Neighbouring: the adjacent houses; the resident neighbours. Al-halil: the husband; the wife: halila; plural hala’il; in the noble Quran: « and the wives of your sons from your loins » (an-Nisa 23). Of the wife also: halil. The neighbour. The dweller. Al-mahall: the place of abode.
