Part of: The Year 11 of the Hijra: the Prophet's Illness and his Death

Among those who wrote for him: the four caliphs Abou Bakr, Oumar, Othman and Ali ibn Abi Talib; Aban ibn Said ibn al-’As, converted after Khaybar or after Houdaybiyya, his conversion prepared by the word of a Syrian monk who described the Prophet to him and bade him carry the greeting; Oubayy ibn Ka’b, master of the reciters, a Badrite: "the first who wrote the revelation before the Messenger of Allah at Medina; and when he was absent Zayd ibn Thabit wrote, as did Othman, Khalid ibn Said and Aban ibn Said"; Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam, in whose house near as-Safa the Prophet hid, a house later called of Khayzouran; Zayd ibn Thabit, and Mou’awiya, and Handhala ibn ar-Rabi’. Oubayy received one day this grace: "Allah has commanded me to recite the Quran upon you"; he asked: has He named me to you? "Yes"; his eyes flowed. And when he had doubted two readings of a sura, the Prophet had both recited, saying of each: "thus it was revealed", then laid his hand on Oubayy’s chest: Oubayy felt as if he were looking at Allah. The versions differ on the year each died, and Allah knows best.
