The seven jinn of Nakhla listen to the Quran

Muhammad ibn Ishaq mentioned the jinn’s listening to the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which occurred on his return from Taif, when he spent the night at Nakhla and prayed dawn there with his Companions: the jinn who were turned toward him listened to his recitation there. Ibn Ishaq said: they were seven. Allah the Most High sent down concerning them:

“(Remember) when We turned toward you a company of jinn to listen to the Quran. When they attended it they said: Listen attentively... Then, when it was concluded, they returned to their people as warners”

Sura al-Ahqaf, 29

Ibn Kathir says: we treated it at length in our book of exegesis, and a part of it has already been cited: Allah is most knowing.

Mut’im ibn Adi’s protection on his return from Taif

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then entered Mecca, returning from Taif, under the protection of Mut’im ibn Adi, and his people redoubled in anger, rage, boldness, denial and obstinacy against him. Allah is the help sought, and in Him is trust.

al-Umawi’s account in his Maghazi

al-Umawi mentioned in his Maghazi that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent Abdallah ibn Urayqit to al-Aknas ibn Shariq to ask him to protect him in Mecca. He answered: “An ally of Quraysh protects not against its core.” He then sent him to Souhayl ibn ’Amr to seek his protection, who said: “The Banu Amir ibn Lu’ayy protect not against the Banu Ka’b ibn Lu’ayy.” He finally sent him to Mut’im ibn Adi, who said: “Yes, tell him to come.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to him, spent that night at his place, and in the morning went out with him and his sons, six or seven, all girded with swords. They entered the mosque, and he said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Perform the tawaf.” They stood, belted with their sword straps, in the place of tawaf. Abu Soufyan approached Mut’im and asked: “Are you protector or follower?” He said: “No: protector.” Abu Soufyan said: “Then he cannot be harmed.” He sat with him until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed his tawaf; then they left with him, and Abu Soufyan went back to his council. He remained thus some days, then he was permitted to emigrate. After the Hijra of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to Medina, Mut’im ibn Adi died shortly after, and Hassan ibn Thabit said: “By Allah, I shall make him inherit,” and he said in his verses:

“Could glory endure to a man one day, … the people would have preserved Mut’im’s glory forever ;”

“You protected the Messenger of Allah against them, and they became … your servants: no offender answered, none in consecration ;”

“Should you be asked about him, Ma’add and Qahtan … would say: he honored the pledge of his neighbor ;”

“He fulfilled his obligation toward his guest … on the day of complaint.”
