The supplication of Prophet Muhammad against Quraysh: “aid me with seven years like the seven of Yousouf”, the famine and the smoke, Abu Soufyan’s intercession, the rain “around us” and its fulfillment at Badr, from al-Boukhari, Mouslim and al-Bayhaqi.

“O Allah, aid me against them with seven years”

al-Bayhaqi mentioned here the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) supplication against Quraysh when she proved intractable, with seven years like the seven years of Yousouf. He cited what the two Sahihs contain, through the chain of al-A’mash, from Mulim ibn Subayh, from Masruq, from Ibn Mas’oud, who said: “Five things have passed: al-Lizam, the Romans, the Smoke, al-Batsha and the Moon.” In another version of Ibn Mas’oud: when Quraysh showed stubbornness toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and delayed entering Islam, he said: “O Allah, aid me against them with seven years like the seven years of Yousouf.” A famine struck them that stripped all things, until they ate carcasses and dead beasts, and one of them would see, between him and the sky, like a veil of smoke, from hunger. Then he supplicated, and Allah lifted it from them.

Abu Soufyan’s intercession and the rain “around us”

Abdallah (Ibn Mas’oud) then recited this verse:

“We will avert the punishment for a little while; yet you will relapse.”

Sura ad-Dukhan, 15

Abdallah (Ibn Mas’oud) then recited this verse:

He said: the verse of the Smoke has passed, that is, the famine that struck them, and that is His word already cited; likewise the verse of the Romans, al-Batsha al-Koubra and the splitting of the Moon, all of it on the day of Badr. al-Bayhaqi said: it refers, and Allah is most knowing, to al-Batsha al-Koubra, the Smoke and the verse of al-Lizam, all accomplished at Badr. He said: al-Boukhari alluded to this relation, then he cited, through the chain of Abd ar-Razzak, from Ma’mar, from Ayyoub, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas.
