To pronounce the name The Compeller in Arabic, we say: Al-Jabbar.
It is written in Arabic: الجبار.
From the Arabic root ج-ب-ر (j-b-r, to compel or restore), on the intensive pattern فَعَّال (fa''al), it conveys irresistible power and restoration.
The Name “The Compeller” means: The One whose will prevails and who restores what is broken. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to renounce pride, struggle against the passions, and trust Allah's power rather than personal means. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
