From the Arabic root ض-ر-ر (d-r-r, harm), ضَارّ (darr) is an intensive active adjective, denoting the one by whose permission harm reaches its place.
The Name “The One Who Permits Harm” means: The One in whose decree hardship occurs, always according to perfect wisdom. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
