📖 1 min readThe Protecting Friend is one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah. Its meaning: The One who cares for His believing servants and directs their affairs.
To pronounce the name The Protecting Friend in Arabic, we say: Al-Waliyy.
It is written in Arabic: الولي.
From the Arabic root و-ل-ي (w-l-y, nearness and guardianship), وَلِيّ (waliyy) follows فَعِيل and denotes the protecting patron and ally of believers.
The Name “The Protecting Friend” means: The One who cares for His believing servants and directs their affairs. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to seek refuge in Allah, become trustworthy, and protect every right placed in one's care. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
