📖 1 min readThe Sustainer is one of the 99 beautiful names of Allah. Its meaning: The One who gives every creature its nourishment and strength.
To pronounce the name The Sustainer in Arabic, we say: Al-Muqit.
It is written in Arabic: المقيت.
From the Arabic root ق-و-ت (q-w-t, nourishment and sustenance), مُقِيت (muqit) is a Form IV active participle, the one who sustains and has power over all.
The Name “The Sustainer” means: The One who gives every creature its nourishment and strength. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to seek lawful provision, share one's means, and never confuse created means with the true Provider. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
