Supplication of the istikharah prayer

قال جابر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنهما : كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، يُعلمنا الاستخارة في الأمور كلها كما يعلمُنا السورة من القرآن ، يقول : إذا هم أحدكم بالأمر فليركع ركعتين من غير الفريضة ، ثم ليقل : اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك ، وأستقدرك بقدرتك ، وأسألك من فضلك العظيم فإنك تقدِرُ ولا أقدِرُ ، وتعلم ولا أعلم ، وأنت علام الغيوب ، اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر -يسمي حاجته خير لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال : عاجلة وآجله فاقدره لي ويسره لي ، ثم بارك لي فيه ، وإن كنت تعلم أن هذا الأمر شر لي في ديني ومعاشي وعاقبة أمري أو قال : عاجله وآجله فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه ، واقدر لي الخير حيث كان ، ثم ارضني به

Pronunciation

Qala Jabir ibn 'Abdillah radiya-llahu 'anhuma: kana rasulu-llahi salla-llahu 'alayhi wa sallam yu'allimuna-l-istikharata fi-l-umuri kulliha kama yu'allimuna suratan mina-l-Qur'an, yaqulu: idha hamma ahadukum bi-l-amri fal-yarka' rak'atayni min ghayri-l-faridah, thumma l-yaqul: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi-'ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika-l-'azim, fa-innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta'lamu wa la a'lam, wa Anta 'allamu-l-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-l-amra — yusammihu hajatahu — khayrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri, au qala: 'ajilihi wa ajilihi, fa-qdir-hu li wa yassir-hu li, thumma barik li fih. Wa in kunta ta'lamu anna hadha-l-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma'ashi wa 'aqibati amri, au qala: 'ajilihi wa ajilihi, fa-srif-hu 'anni wa-srif-ni 'anhu, wa-qdir li-l-khayra haythu kana, thumma rdimini bih.

Translation

Jabir ibn 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us istikharah in all matters, as he taught us a surah of the Quran. He said: "When one of you intends a matter, let him pray two rak'ahs beyond the obligatory prayer, then let him say: O Allah, I seek Your choice by Your knowledge, I seek Your power by Your might, and I ask You from Your immense bounty; for You are capable while I am not, You know while I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter — let him name his need — is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my end, or he says: in the near and the distant, decree it for me, make it easy for me, then bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is evil for me in my religion, my livelihood and my end, or he says: in the near and the distant, turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it."

وما ندم من استخار الخالق ، وشاور المخلوقين المؤمنين وتثبت في أمره ، فقد قال سبحانه{ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الأَمْرِ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللّهِ}

Pronunciation

Wa ma nadima mina-stakhara-l-Khaliqa, wa shawara-l-makhluqina-l-mu'minina, wa thabata fi amrih, qala subhanahu: {Wa shawir-hum fi-l-amr, fa-idha 'azamta fa-tawakkal 'ala-llah}.

Translation

And whoever consulted the Creator, deliberated with believing creatures, and then resolved, the Most High has said: {Take their counsel in the matter; then, once resolved, place your trust in Allah}.
