Marriage can be the trigger of a conversion: what fiqh says about sincerity, conversion for appearance, and the rules of marriage with a person of the Book.
Marriage can be the path leading to Islam: if the belief becomes sincere, the conversion is valid, whatever the trigger was, for scholars do not condition the validity of the testimony on the initial motive. On the other hand, pronouncing the shahada without believing, only to marry, does not make you a Muslim. The essential: take the time to learn and believe before committing, then verify the rules of the marriage concerned.

📖 2 min readThe question often returns: "I am converting to marry a Muslim, is it really valid?" The fiqh answer is clear: the validity of conversion depends on the heart's belief and the sincere pronunciation, not on the motive that brought you here.
A human trigger (love, an encounter, a reading) stains nothing: Allah brings to Him by the paths He chooses, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Islam erases all that preceded it (Sahih Muslim 121). On the other hand, testifying without believing, playing a role to land a marriage, does not make you a Muslim: a facade remains a facade, and a religious marriage concluded on that basis would be fragile before Allah.
The unanimous counsel of imams to mixed couples: do not put the conversion in the marriage's schedule. Take weeks or months to learn, pray, ask your questions, away from any emotional pressure: read the complete path, pronounce the testimony when your heart is there, then organize the engagement.
A conversion lived for itself is solid;
a conversion squeezed between the diet and the dress cracks.
A delicate case deserves an imam: that of a person converted long ago, already civilly married to a non-Muslim; the scholars treat these situations case by case, with justice for each.
It is here that sincerity shows: if your Islam survives the couple, it was real. Many converts testify that the breakup revealed the true value of their faith. Allah never loses a sincere soul: the page are past sins forgiven? recalls that a new start always counts before Him.
Yes, if you believe sincerely: Allah does not demand that the first interest in Islam be selfless. Many converts began their path with an encounter; what counts is the faith of the present moment.
Yes, the Quran permits it with a woman of the Book (Quran 5:5), while keeping his family obligations. A Muslim woman, for her part, marries a Muslim (Quran 2:221). Particular cases go to an imam.
