Sending blessings on the Prophet is a constant remembrance: each mention of his name calls for one. Some moments carry a precise textual foundation; here they are, hadith by hadith.

📖 2 min readThis is the base rule: when the Prophet is named, one answers "sallallahu alayhi wa sallam". The authentic texts make this a mark of the generous heart: "The miserly one is he before whom I am mentioned without him sending blessings upon me" (at-Tirmidhi, hasan sahih; Muslim reports the same meaning). Conversely, the tradition reports that Allah returns the spirit to the Prophet so he answers each person's greeting: "No one greets me except that Allah returns my spirit to me so that I return his greeting" (Abu Dawud, authentic isnad).
In another register, the Prophet said: "Whoever sits in a sitting in which he does not remember Allah will bear regret from Allah, and whoever lies in a bed in which he does not remember Allah will bear regret from Allah" (Abu Dawud, 4856): gatherings where Allah and His Prophet are remembered are protected from regret, and blessings on the Prophet are their best conclusion.
"When you hear the call, say as the muezzin says, then send blessings upon me: whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten upon him. Then ask Allah for the Wasila (the highest rank of Paradise): it is a rank fitting only one servant of Allah, and I hope to be he. Whoever asks for the Wasila on my behalf will attain my intercession."

The jurists agree: sending blessings on the Prophet after the adhan is recommended (mashru'a), with no divergence reported in the collections; the tathwib ("prayer is better than sleep") is however specific to the fajr adhan.
The blessing has its fixed place in the tashahhud, before the final salam. All scholars establish its lawfulness; on its rank, ash-Shafi'i holds it obligatory in the final sitting, while the Hanafis, Malikis and Ahmad in one narration make it a sunna. Friday is the day when "the community's blessings are presented to the Prophet" (Abu Dawud, 1047, isnad graded authentic by an-Nawawi): the one who sends the most blessings on him that day will be the closest to him in rank (same meaning in al-Bayhaqi, 5995). at-Tirmidhi (488) also recalls it is "the best day on which the sun has risen".

And the Prophet taught Fudala ibn Ubayd: "When one of you supplicates, let him begin by praising his Lord, then send blessings on the Prophet, then supplicate thereafter as he wishes" (Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, "hasan sahih"). Praise first, blessings on the Prophet next, request last: that is the order that makes supplication ascend.
