Once in life per Shafi'is and Hanbalis; strong sunna per Hanafis and Malikis.

When to perform 'umra?

All year; Ramadan's 'umra equals a hajj in reward (reported from the Prophet, al-Bukhari 1782).

Does the miqat apply to 'umra?

Yes: ihram is taken at the miqat as for hajj, with 'umra's talbiya.
