Hayd, meaning menstruation, is a reality regulated by the Sharia through precise rulings on which depend purity, prayer, fasting, Quran recitation, pilgrimage and many rules of marriage and divorce. The jurists of the 4 Sunni schools developed, from the Quran and the Sunna, a detailed framework: the definition and colors of the blood, the age and duration limits of hayd and of purity, the status of the pregnant woman, the purity of the body of the menstruating woman, and the consequences for prayer and fasting. This page follows faithfully the leaves of the juridical encyclopedia al-Mawsua al-fiqhiyya devoted to the rules of hayd (first part), with the positions attributed exactly to each school and the references of the classical works.
