Definition Al-bid'a

Al-bid'a according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It is the deed contrary to the Sunna; it was called bid'a because its author originated it with no precedent to follow.

Al-bid'a according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

It is the newly introduced matter which the Companions and the Followers did not practise and which no religious evidence required.

Al-bid'a according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

It is the newly introduced matter. In Sharh al-Maqasid, the blameworthy bid'a is what is introduced into religion which did not exist in the time of the Companions or the Followers, and for which there is no religious evidence. Among the ignorant are those who make every matter that did not exist in the time of the Companions a blameworthy bid'a even without an established proof of its ugliness, clinging to his saying (may prayer and peace be upon him): "Beware of newly introduced matters"; they do not know that what is meant is introducing into religion what is not of it: may Allah, the Most High, protect us from following whims and establish us upon following the guidance of the Prophet and his noble family.

Al-bid'a according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: from bad'atou ash-shay': you originated it with a bid'a, and ibtada'atouhu: when you create and begin it. And al-bad': the thing that is first. Hence His word: "Say: I am not the first of the messengers".

Al-bid'a according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

The deed contrary to the Sunna.

Al-bid'a according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

It is the newly introduced matter which the Companions and the Followers did not practise and which no religious evidence required; thus said as-Sayyid.
