(In Persian: to wrap around, encircle, bar from travel, and confine). Bringing a thing down to a determinate number; from it the hasr of the divisible to its divisions; it is of several kinds: the affirmation of exhaustiveness, if it arises from mere consideration of the understanding of the divisions without recourse to anything else, such that it is common between negation and affirmation, is intellectual; if it is drawn from a proof indicating the impossibility of another division, it is limitative, that is, certain; if it is drawn from induction, it is inductive; and if it arises from consideration of an aptness of distinction and difference adopted by the one making the division, it is conventional.

Either intellectual: that which is common between negation and affirmation; the intellectual possible is excluded, not the existential possible, as in: "signification is either vocal or non-vocal". Or inductive: that which is not common between negation and affirmation, but obtained by induction and examination; the intellectual possible does not harm it, but the possible of occurrence does, as in: "vocal signification is either conventional or natural".

Bringing a thing down to a determinate number; and the hasr and the ihsar: the barring from the way to Allah's House; ihsar is said of the manifest barring, like the enemy, and of the hidden barring, like illness, while hasr is said only of the hidden barring, said al-Raghib.
