Definition Al-msnd mn al-ḥdyth

Al-msnd mn al-ḥdyth according to Kitab at-Ta'rifat (Al-Jurjani)

The opposite of al-mursal, it is that whose chain of transmission is connected back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. It is of three categories: mutawatir, mashhur, and ahad. The musnad may sometimes be connected and sometimes interrupted. The connected is like that which Malik narrated from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The interrupted is like that which Malik narrated from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Abbas, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. This is therefore a musnad because it has been attributed back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and it is interrupted because al-Zuhri did not hear from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him.
