Al-tʿlyq according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

To make a thing suspended upon another. And from this is the suspension of divorce. And the meaning of the suspension of the verbs of the hearts among the grammarians is the nullification of their action in wording and not in meaning, taken from their saying: a suspended woman, meaning her husband is missing, for she is neither with the husband due to his loss, nor without him due to the possibility of his existence, and for this reason she is not able to marry another husband. And the difference between the suspension of those verbs and their cancellation is that suspension is obligatory and cancellation is permissible. And also that cancellation is the nullification of their action in wording and meaning, and suspension is the nullification of their action in wording only, as has passed. And the difference between the two groups is that the first is with regard to the description and the second is with regard to the essence.

Al-tʿlyq according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

It is linking the occurrence of the content of a sentence to the occurrence of the content of another sentence, and it is called an oath.

Al-tʿlyq according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

Verbal noun of 'allaqa and ta'allaq. - Section: its establishment and its structure. - In terminology: linking the occurrence of the content of a sentence to the occurrence of the content of another sentence, and the first sentence is the sentence of the recompense, and the second is the sentence of the condition. And from this is the suspension of divorce, as if he said: if you enter the house, you are divorced. And suspension is an oath linguistically and terminologically. (Ibn Abidin) Al-'ilq: the precious of everything. Plural: a'laq. Al-'alaqah: the piece of thick blood. Plural: 'alaq. And in the Noble Quran: ﴿And certainly We created man from an extract of clay, * Then We placed him as a drop (of sperm) in a secure lodging, * Then We made the drop into an adherence ('alaqah), then We made the adherence into a lump of flesh, then We made the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We brought him forth as another creation. So blessed is Allah, the Best of creators﴾ (Al-Mu'minun) -: a worm in water that sucks blood. Al-'aluq: what clings to a man. -: the water of the stallion. -: the one who loves no one except her husband. Al-mi'laq: what is suspended of meat, or grapes, and the like.
