Text of the hadith

On the authority of Abdallah ibn Mas'oud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the truthful and believed one, narrated to us: « Each of you is assembled in his mother's womb for forty days as a drop of semen, then he is a clinging clot the like of that, then a lump of flesh the like of that; then the angel is sent to him and breathes into him the spirit, and he is charged with four words: to write his provision, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or blessed. By Allah, other than whom there is no deity: one of you performs the deeds of the people of Paradise until there remains between him and it but an arm's length, then the decree overtakes him and he performs the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it; and one of you performs the deeds of the people of the Fire until there remains between him and it but an arm's length, then the decree overtakes him and he performs the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it. » Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.

The collection

This hadith belongs to the collection of the 40 hadiths of Imam an-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him), the most studied hadith compilation in the world: foundations of faith, worship and character, all authentic narrations.

Arabic version with the commentary of Ibn Rajab

Of this word (meaning: then We made him a sperm-drop in a firm lodging): its tafsir was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud: al-A'mash reports Khaythama, from Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: "when the sperm-drop falls in the womb: it flies in each of its hair and nail: then stays forty days: then descends in the womb: and becomes an 'alaqa." He said: that is its gathering. Ibn Abi Hatim and others extracted it. And the gathering's tafsir was also narrated raised: in another meaning: at-Tabarani and Ibn Mandah in his oneness-book extracted: Malik ibn al-Huwayrith's hadith: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "when Allah, the Most High, wills to create a servant: the man uniting the woman: his water flies in every vein and limb of hers: then on the seventh day Allah, the Most High, gathers it: then presents it in every vein of his: Adam-less:

"In what form He willed, He composed you."

Hud, 11

Ibn Mandah said: its chain connected: famous: Abu Isa's (at-Tirmidhi) and an-Nasa'i's way and others. Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim and at-Tabarani extracted: Muthar ibn al-Haytham's narration: Musa ibn Ali ibn Riah: father: grandfather: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his grandfather: O so-and-so! what was born you? He said: O Messenger of Allah! what might be born me: boy or girl? He said: whom will he resemble? He said: who knows whom he resembles: mother or father? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "say never thus: when the sperm-drop settles in the womb: Allah brings it all kinship between it and Adam: read you not the verse:

"In what form He willed, He composed you?"

Hud, 11

He said: shaped you." Chain weak: Muthar ibn al-Haytham very weak: al-Bukhari said: unauthenticated hadith: Musa ibn Ali from father: father became Muslim only in Abu Bakr as-Siddiq's era, may Allah be pleased with him: meaning: no companionship. Testifying this meaning: the Prophet's word (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to him who said: my wife bore a black boy: he said: "perhaps a vein drew him out."

Following sentences' explanation

His word: then becomes 'alaqa like: meaning forty days. 'Alaqa: blood-clot. Then becomes mudgha like: meaning forty days: mudgha: flesh-piece. Then Allah sends an angel: soul-blowing: commanded four words: provision-, deed-, term-writing: wretched or happy.

The hadith's signification

Hadith indicates: moving one hundred twenty days in three phases: each forty a phase: first forty sperm-drop: second 'alaqa: third mudgha: after one hundred twenty the angel souls-blown: four words written.

The Quran and creation-phases

Allah, the Most High, mentioned Quran-many-places the embryo's phases-movement: the Most High's word:

"O people! Doubting resurrection: created you from earth: then sperm-drop: then 'alaqa: then formed and unformed mudgha: explaining you: fixing in wombs what We will till a named term."

Al-Hajj, 5

Three phases mentioned: sperm-drop, 'alaqa, mudgha, Quran-multiple-places. Another place more mentioned: believers-sura:

"We created man from earth-sullala: then made him a sperm-drop in a firm lodging: then created of the drop an 'alaqa: of the 'alaqa a mudgha: of the mudgha bones: clothed the bones flesh: produced him another creation: blessed Allah, best of creators!"

Al-Mou'minoun, 12-14

Seven turns Allah mentioned this verse for Adam's-son's creation before soul-blowing.

The athars therein

Ibn Abbas, may Allah please both, said: Adam's son created of seven: reciting the verse. Asked 'azl: recited: "shall anyone be created till this attribute passes?" Version: "shall a soul die till this creation-passing?"

Rifa'a ibn Rafi' reported: Ali, az-Zubayr, Sa'd, Prophet-companions-group (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat Umar-near: 'azl-discussing: no-harm saying. A man: "they claim it the lesser buried-alive girl?" Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "not buried-alive till seven-turns-passing: earth-sullala: sperm-drop: 'alaqa: mudgha: bones: flesh: another-creation?" Umar, may Allah be pleased with him: "true-spoken: Allah life-prolonging!" Ad-Darqutni reports al-Mu'talif wal-Mukhtalif.

Abortion

Jurists-category dispensed woman belly-content dropping pre-soul-blowing: 'azl-likening. Weak saying: embryo formed-child: maybe imagined: 'azl no-child-at-all: conception-preventing means: conception may not be prevented Allah willing creation: Prophet's word (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) 'azl-asked: "no harm non-withdrawing: no breathed soul: Allah its creator." Companions explicit: 'alaqa-becoming: woman dropping not permitted: formed-child: unlike unformed sperm-drop: maybe never.

Rest-hadith-mentioned. 'Asim's hadith: Abu Wa'il: Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him: Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "sperm-drop womb-settling: forty nights sperm-drop: forty 'alaqa: forty nights bones: Allah bones-flesh-clothing." Ahmad's narration indicates: flesh-clothing only post-one-hundred-sixty. Doubtlessly wrong: one-hundred-twenty soul-blown doubtlessly: coming-mentioned. Ali ibn Zayd Jud'an's son: un-arguable.
