Part of: The Year 11 of the Hijra: the Prophet's Illness and his Death
The people were busy with the pledge of allegiance to the Truthful the rest of Monday and part of Tuesday; when the allegiance was settled and complete, they set about preparing the Messenger of Allah, taking for every difficulty their example from Abou Bakr. Sulayman ibn Bourayda relates that, as they washed the Messenger of Allah, a herald cried from within the house: "Strip not the Messenger of Allah of his shirt!" Ibn Majah reports it. And Aïcha says: when they wished to wash the Prophet, they said: we know not whether to strip him as the dead are stripped, or to wash him with his shirt upon him. Then they slept upon that, and one of them heard in sleep a voice saying: wash the Prophet with his shirt on him! They awoke and found him clothed in his shirt, and they washed him so, pouring water over him and rubbing him over the shirt.
His shroud was three white garments of the Yemen, without shirt nor turban, and to them was added, by one version, the Yemeni cotton garment he wore when he gave up his soul. The prayer over him was made without an imam: the people entered in groups, each group praying over him individually: no man, no woman, no child remained but prayed over him. Ali prayed over him in a particular manner, making wide supplications and pronouncing the takbir five times, as related. Then they dug the grave and laid him in the chamber of Aïcha, where his soul had been taken, on the night of Tuesday or Wednesday. The Prophet had said in his lifetime: "No prophet is taken but that he is buried where his soul was taken": so they buried him in the chamber, and his grave remains there to this day, within the Mosque of the Prophet, upon him the best prayer and the purest salutation. And to Allah belong praise and favour.
