Part of: The Year 11 of the Hijra: the Prophet's Illness and his Death
The substance of the Messenger of Allah’s bequests at the approach of death was: "The prayer! The prayer! And what your right hands possess!" until he gurgled it in his breast, his tongue unable to finish it, according to Anas, Oum Salama and others. Ali relates that the Messenger of Allah ordered him to bring a tablet to write what would preserve his community from straying after him; Ali feared his soul might depart and said: I retain and remember! He said: "I bequeath the prayer, the zakat and what your right hands possess." He said also, according to Jabir: "Let none of you die but having good thoughts of Allah": for Allah says: I am as My servant thinks of Me. And he kept casting a garment over his face; when distress seized him he uncovered it, saying: "The curse of Allah upon the Jews and Christians: they took the graves of their prophets as places of prayer!" warning against what they had done: Malik relates these words from Omar ibn Abd al-Aziz, who held them to be of the Prophet’s last words: two religions shall not remain in the land of the Arabs.
