Part of: The Year 11 of the Hijra: the Prophet's Illness and his Death
Abdallah ibn Mas’oud relates that he entered upon him during his fever and passed his hand over him: O Messenger of Allah, you suffer a violent fever! He said: "Yes: I suffer as two men among you suffer." Ibn Mas’oud said: you have two rewards? He said: "Yes, by Him in whose hand is my soul: no Muslim on earth is struck by an ailment or other but Allah casts down his sins by it as the tree casts down its leaves!"
The two Sahihs reported it. Abou Sa’id al-Khoudri placed his hand on him and said: by Allah, I cannot bear to lay my hand on you, so hard is your fever! He said: "We, the company of prophets, are tried double as our reward is doubled: the prophet is tried until the louse kills him, and the believer until he picks up his cloak. And they rejoice in trial as you rejoice in ease."
Aïcha said: never saw I pain harder upon anyone than upon the Messenger of Allah; and: the Messenger of Allah died between my palate and my throat, so never again shall I hate the severity of death for anyone after the Prophet. And it is related: the people most tried are the prophets, then the righteous, then the best, the best: a man is tried according to his religion; if he is firm in his religion, he is tried the harder.
