Ali ibn Abi Talib: the first of the boys

The chapter of the mention of the first to accept Islam of the early companions. Ibn Ishaq said: then Ali ibn Abi Talib came the next day, while the two were praying: Ali said: O Muhammad, what is this? He said: "it is the religion of Allah which He has chosen for Himself, and sent His messengers with: I call you to Allah alone without partner: and to His worship: and to disbelieve in al-Lat and al-Uzza." Ali said: this is a matter I have never heard before: I shall not decide upon it until I speak to Abu Talib. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked spreading his secret upon him before his affair became manifest: and he said to him: "O Ali, if you do not accept Islam, then conceal it." Ali remained that night: then Allah placed Islam in the heart of Ali:

and he came in the morning to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until he came to him: and said: what have you offered me, O Muhammad? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "you testify that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner: and disbelieve in al-Lat and al-Uzza: and disavow the rivals." Ali did so and accepted Islam: and he continued coming to him in fear of Abu Talib: and Ali concealed his Islam and did not manifest it. And the son of Haritha, meaning Zayd, accepted Islam: and the two remained near a month, Ali coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And it was among the favors Allah bestowed on Ali that he was in the lap of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) before Islam.

Ibn Ishaq said, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: it was among the graces of Allah upon Ali that Quraysh were stricken by a severe crisis: and Abu Talib had many dependents: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his uncle al-Abbas, who was the wealthiest of Banu Hashim: "O Abbas, your brother Abu Talib has many dependents: and the people have been stricken by what you see of this crisis: so let us go and lighten him of his dependents." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took Ali and brought him to himself: and he remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until Allah sent him as a prophet: and Ali followed him: and believed in him: and confirmed him.

Yunus reported from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: Yahya ibn Abi al-Ash’ath al-Kindi, of the people of Kufa, told me that Isma’il ibn Abi Iyas ibn ’Ufayyif told him, from his father, from his grandfather ’Ufayyif, who was the milk brother of al-Ash’ath ibn Qays: I was a trading man: I came to Mina in the days of pilgrimage: and al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib was a trading man: I came to him to buy from him and sell to him: a man came out of a tent and stood praying facing the Kaaba: then a woman came out and stood praying: and a boy came out and stood praying with him: I said: O Abbas, what is this religion? This is a religion we know not what it is: He said: this is Muhammad ibn Abdallah, who claims Allah has sent him: and that the treasuries of Chosroes and Caesar will be opened to him: and this woman is his wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid, who believed in him: and this boy is his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib, who believed in him. ’Ufayyif said: would that I had believed that day: I would then have been the second. And Ibrahim ibn Sa’d followed him up from Ibn Ishaq: and said in the hadith: a man came out of a tent near him and looked at the sky: and when he saw it had declined he stood praying: then he mentioned Khadija standing behind him.

Ibn Jarir said: Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Muharibi told me: Sa’id ibn Khuthaym told us, from Asad ibn Abda al-Bajali, from Yahya ibn ’Ufayyif, from ’Ufayyif: I came in the time of the Jahiliyya to Mecca: and stayed with al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib: and when the sun rose and wheeled in the sky, while I was looking at the Kaaba, a young man came and cast his gaze at the sky: then turned to the Kaaba and stood facing it: he did not linger until a boy came and stood at his right: he did not linger until a woman came and stood behind the two: the young man bowed and the boy and the woman bowed: he raised and the boy and the woman raised: the young man fell prostrate and the two prostrated with him: I said: O Abbas, a great affair: He said: a great affair: He said: do you know who this is? I said: no: He said: this is Muhammad ibn Abdallah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, my brother’s son: do you know who the boy is? I said: no: He said: this is Ali ibn Abi Talib: do you know who this woman behind the two is? I said: no: He said: this is Khadija bint Khuwaylid, wife of my brother’s son: and he told me that your Lord, Lord of the heaven, commanded him this that you see them upon: and by Allah, I know not on the face of the whole earth anyone upon this religion besides these three.

Ibn Jarir said: Ibn Humayd told me: Isa ibn Sawada ibn al-Ja’d told us: Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir and Rabi’a ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman and Abu Hazim and al-Kalbi told us: Ali is the first to accept Islam: and al-Kalbi said: he accepted Islam at nine years of age. And Salama told us, from Ibn Ishaq: the first male to believe in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and pray with him and confirm him was Ali ibn Abi Talib, at ten years of age: and he was in the lap of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) before Islam. Al-Waqidi said: Ibrahim ibn Nafi’ informed us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: Ali accepted Islam at ten years of age. Al-Waqidi said: and our companions agreed that Ali accepted Islam a year after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was made a prophet.

And Muhammad ibn Ka’b said: the first of this community to accept Islam was Khadija: and the first two men to accept Islam were Abu Bakr and Ali: and Ali accepted Islam before Abu Bakr: and Ali concealed his faith in fear of his father: until his father met him: and said: have you accepted Islam? He said: yes. He said: then aid your cousin and support him. And Abu Bakr as-Siddiq was the first to manifest Islam. And Ibn Jarir reported in his History, from the hadith of Shu’ba, from Abu Balj, from Amr ibn Maymun, from Ibn Abbas: the first who prayed: Ali. And Zakariyya ibn Yahya ad-Darir told us: Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahr told us: Sharik told us, from Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn ’Aqil, from Jabir: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sent on Monday: and Ali prayed on Tuesday. And it was reported, from the hadith of Shu’ba, from Amr ibn Murra, from Abu Hamza, a man of the Ansar: I heard Zayd ibn Arqam say: the first to accept Islam with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was Ali ibn Abi Talib: I mentioned it to an-Nakha’i and he denied it: and Abu Bakr is the first to accept Islam.

Ubaydallah ibn Musa told us: al-’Ala told us, from al-Minhal ibn Amr, from Abbad ibn Abdallah: I heard Ali say: I am the servant of Allah, and the brother of His Messenger: and I am the greatest of the truthful: none says it after me but a lying calumniator: I prayed before the people by seven years. And thus Ibn Majah reported it, from Muhammad ibn Isma’il ar-Razi, from Ubaydallah ibn Musa al-’Absi, who is a Rafidite among the men of the Sahih: from al-’Ala ibn Salih al-Asadi al-Kufi: they considered him trustworthy: but Abu Hatim said: he was of the freed slaves of the Rafidites: and Ali ibn al-Madini said: he reported rejected hadiths: and al-Minhal ibn Amr is trustworthy: and as for his elder, Abbad ibn Abdallah, who is al-Asadi al-Kufi: Ali ibn al-Madini said of him: he is weak in hadith: and al-Bukhari said: of him is examination: and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in ath-Thiqat. And this hadith is objectionable in any case: and Ali (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would not say it: and how could he have prayed before the people by seven years? That is not conceivable at all: and Allah knows best.

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: the first of the free men

And others said: the first to accept Islam of this community is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. And the reconciling of all these sayings is that Khadija is the first to accept Islam of the women: and the apparent of the accounts: before the men also: and the first to accept Islam of the freed slaves is Zayd ibn Haritha: and the first to accept Islam of the boys is Ali ibn Abi Talib: for he was small, below maturity, upon the well-known account: and these were then the people of the house: and the first to accept Islam of the free men is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: and his Islam was more beneficial than the Islam of those mentioned before: for he was a greatly honored noble: and a chief in Quraysh, honored: and a man of wealth: and a caller to Islam: and he was beloved, conciliatory, spending wealth in obedience to Allah and His Messenger: as its detail will come.

Yunus reported, from Ibn Ishaq: then Abu Bakr as-Siddiq met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: is it true what Quraysh say of you, O Muhammad: of your leaving our deities: making our minds folly: and declaring disbelief upon our fathers? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "rather yes: I am the Messenger of Allah and His prophet, sent to convey His message: and to call you to Allah in truth: and by Allah it is indeed the truth: I call you, O Abu Bakr, to Allah alone without partner: and to worship none besides Him: and to allegiance upon His obedience." And he recited to him the Quran: he neither accepted nor denied: and he accepted Islam: and disbelieved in the idols: and cast off the rivals: and acknowledged the truth of Islam: and Abu Bakr returned a believer, confirming.

Ibn Ishaq said: Muhammad ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abdallah ibn al-Husayn at-Tamimi told me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I never called anyone to Islam but he had a hesitation and wavering and looking, except Abu Bakr, who tarried not when I mentioned it, and wavered not." Tarawwud means lingering. And what Ibn Ishaq mentioned in his word: he neither accepted nor denied: is objectionable: for Ibn Ishaq and others mentioned he was the companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) before the mission: and he knew of his truthfulness, his trustworthiness, the goodness of his character and the nobility of his manners, what prevented him from lying upon creation: how then could he lie upon Allah? For this reason, as soon as he mentioned to him that Allah had sent him he hastened to confirm him, and did not falter, nor tarry: and we have mentioned the manner of his Islam in our book devoted to his sira: and inserted his virtues and his praiseworthy traits: and followed that with the sira of al-Faruq also: and inserted what each of them reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of hadiths, and what came from him of athars and rulings and fatwas: and that reached three volumes: and to Allah are praise and favor.

It is established in the Sahih of al-Bukhari, from Abu ad-Darda, in the hadith of what was between Abu Bakr and Umar of dispute: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah sent me to you, and you said: you lie: and Abu Bakr said: he speaks true: and he paired me with his self and his wealth: will you leave me my companion?" twice: and he was not harmed after that: and this is like a text that he was the first to accept Islam. And at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Hibban reported, from the hadith of Shu’ba, from Sa’id al-Jariri, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa’id: Abu Bakr as-Siddiq said: am I not the most deserving of the people of it, am I not the first who accepted Islam, am I not the master of such?

And Ibn ’Asakir reported, through Buhlul ibn Ubayd: Abu Ishaq as-Sabi’i told us, from al-Harith: I heard Ali say: the first of the men to accept Islam is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: and the first of the men to pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is Ali ibn Abi Talib. And Shu’ba said: from Amr ibn Murra, from Abu Hamza, from Zayd ibn Arqam: the first to pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: and the version of Ibn Jarir of this hadith preceded, through Shu’ba, from Amr ibn Murra, from Abu Hamza, from Zayd ibn Arqam: the first to accept Islam is Ali ibn Abi Talib: Amr ibn Murra said: I mentioned it to Ibrahim an-Nakha’i and he denied it: and he said: the first to accept Islam is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. And al-Waqidi reported, by his chains, from Abu Arwa ad-Dawsi, and Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman, and a group of the predecessors: the first to accept Islam is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. And Ya’qub ibn Sufyan said: Abu Bakr al-Humaydi told us: Sufyan ibn ’Uyayna told us, from Malik ibn Mighwal, from a man: Ibn Abbas was asked who was the first to believe: and he said: Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: have you not heard the word of Hassan:

When you remember a sorrow from a trusted brother: remember your brother Abu Bakr by what he did:

Best of creation, truest of it and most just: after the Prophet: and most worthy of what he bore:

The follower, the second, praised in his station: and the first of the people of them to confirm the messengers:

He lived praised for the command of Allah, following: the command of his companion, departed and transferred.

And Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba reported it: an elder of ours told us, from Mujalid, from Amir: I asked Ibn Abbas, or Ibn Abbas was asked: which of the people was first in Islam? He said: have you not heard the word of Hassan ibn Thabit: and he mentioned it. And thus al-Haytham ibn Adi reported it, from Mujalid, from Amir ash-Sha’bi: I asked Ibn Abbas: and he mentioned it. And Abu l-Qasim al-Baghawi said: Surayj ibn Yunus told me: Yusuf ibn al-Majishun told us: I lived our elders, among them Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, and Rabi’a ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman, and Salih ibn Kaysan, and Uthman ibn Muhammad: they doubt not that the first of the people in Islam is Abu Bakr as-Siddiq. I say: and thus said Ibrahim an-Nakha’i, and Muhammad ibn Ka’b, and Muhammad ibn Sirin, and Sa’d ibn Ibrahim: and it is the well-known: among the majority of the people of the Sunna. And Ibn ’Asakir reported, from Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, that they said: he was not the first of them in Islam: but he was the best of them in Islam: Sa’d said: five believed before him.

Khadija, Zayd and the seven first to manifest Islam

And it is established in the Sahih of al-Bukhari, from the hadith of Hammam ibn al-Harith, from Ammar ibn Yasir: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and with him were but five slaves, and two women, and Abu Bakr. And Imam Ahmad and Ibn Majah reported, from the hadith of Asim ibn Abi an-Najud, from Zirr, from Ibn Mas’ud: the first to manifest Islam were seven: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Abu Bakr, and Ammar, and his mother Sumayya, and Suhayb, and Bilal, and al-Miqdad: as for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Allah protected him by his uncle: and as for Abu Bakr, Allah protected him by his people: and as for the rest of them, the polytheists seized them: clothed them in coats of iron mail: and exposed them to the sun: and there was none of them but yielded to them what they wanted: except Bilal: for he gave his soul cheaply for Allah: and became lowly to his people: so they seized him: and gave him to the boys: who made him circulate the valleys of Mecca: while he said: One, One. And thus ath-Thawri reported it, from Mansur, from Mujahid, without naming a Companion.

As for what Ibn Jarir reported, saying: Ibn Humayd informed us: Kinana ibn Jabala told us, from Ibrahim ibn Tahman, from Hajjaj, from Qatada, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d, from Muhammad ibn Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas: I said to my father: was Abu Bakr the first of you in Islam? He said: no: and more than fifty accepted Islam before him: but he was the best of us in Islam: it is a hadith objectionable in chain and text.

Ibn Jarir said: and others said: the first to accept Islam was Zayd ibn Haritha. Then he reported, through al-Waqidi, from Ibn Abi Dhi’b: I asked az-Zuhri: who was the first of the women to accept Islam? He said: Khadija: I said: then of the men? He said: Zayd ibn Haritha: and thus said Urwa, and Sulayman ibn Yasir, and more than one: the first of the men to accept Islam is Zayd ibn Haritha. And Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, answered by reconciling these sayings: that the first of the free men to accept Islam is Abu Bakr: and of the women Khadija: and of the freed slaves Zayd ibn Haritha: and of the boys Ali ibn Abi Talib: all together.

The eight forerunners: Abu Bakr’s call and the monk of Bosra

Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: when Abu Bakr accepted Islam and manifested his Islam, he called to Allah: and Abu Bakr was a man sociable with his people, beloved, gentle: and he was the closest of Quraysh in kinship to Quraysh: and the most knowledgeable of Quraysh of what was in it of good and evil: and he was a trading man of character and beneficence: and the men of his people came to him and kept his company, for more than one reason: for his knowledge, his trade, and the goodness of his company: so he began calling to Islam those of his people he trusted, of those who visited him and sat with him: and accepted Islam at his hands, as reached me: az-Zubayr ibn al-’Awwam, and Uthman ibn ’Affan, and Talha ibn Ubaydallah, and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abd ar-Rahman ibn ’Awf: and they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Abu Bakr with them: and he offered them Islam: and recited to them the Quran: and informed them of the truth of Islam: and they believed: and these were the eight who preceded in Islam: and confirmed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and believed in what came from Allah.

And Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi said: adh-Dhahhak ibn Uthman told me, from Makhrama ibn Sulayman al-Walibi, from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Talha: Talha ibn Ubaydallah said: I attended the market of Bosra: and behold a monk in his cell: saying: ask the people of the season: is there among them a man of the Sanctuary? Talha said: I said: yes, I: and he said: has Ahmad appeared yet? I said: and who is Ahmad? He said: the son of Abdallah ibn Abd al-Muttalib: this is the month in which he comes out: and he is the last of the prophets: his place of emergence is the Sanctuary: and his emigration to palm trees: and a lava tract: and salt flats: so beware you are not preceded to him. Talha said: so there fell into my heart what he said: and I went out swiftly until I came to Mecca: I said: has there been an event? They said: yes: Muhammad ibn Abdallah the Trustworthy has declared himself a prophet: and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafa has followed him:

He said: so I went out until I entered upon Abu Bakr: and I said: have you followed this man? He said: yes: then go to him: enter upon him: follow him: for he calls to the truth: and Talha informed Abu Bakr of what the monk said: and Abu Bakr went out with Talha: and entered with him upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and Talha accepted Islam: and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of what the monk said: and he rejoiced at that: and when Abu Bakr and Talha accepted Islam: Nawfal ibn Khuwaylid ibn al-’Adawiyya seized the two of them, who was called the Lion of Quraysh: and bound them in one rope: and Banu Taym protected them not: and for that reason Abu Bakr and Talha were named the Two Roped Companions. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Allah, spare us the evil of the son of al-’Adawiyya: al-Bayhaqi reported it.

The first public preaching and the blows of Utbah

And the hafiz Abu l-Hasan Khaythama ibn Sulayman al-Atrabulsi said: Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-’Aziz al-’Umari, judge of al-Massissa, told us: Abu Bakr Abdallah ibn Ubaydallah ibn Ishaq ibn Muhammad ibn ’Imran ibn Musa ibn Talha ibn ’Ubaydallah told us: my father Ubaydallah told me: Abdallah ibn Muhammad ibn ’Imran ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Talha told me: my father Muhammad ibn ’Imran told me, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, from A’isha: Abu Bakr went out intending the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and he had a friend in the Jahiliyya: and he met him: and he said: O Abu l-Qasim, you are missed from the councils of your people: and they accuse you of slighting their fathers and mothers. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I am the Messenger of Allah: I call you to Allah: and when he finished his speech Abu Bakr accepted Islam: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed: and between the two lava tracts none was more joyful at the Islam of Abu Bakr than he: and Abu Bakr went rejoicing to Uthman ibn ’Affan, and Talha ibn Ubaydallah, and az-Zubayr ibn al-’Awwam, and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas: and they accepted Islam: then he came the next day with Uthman ibn Maz’un, and Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, and Abd ar-Rahman ibn ’Awf, and Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Asad, and al-Arqam ibn Abi l-Arqam:

and they accepted Islam. Abdallah ibn Muhammad said: my father Muhammad ibn ’Imran told me, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, from A’isha: when the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gathered: and they were thirty-eight men: Abu Bakr pressed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) upon the manifesting: and he said: O Abu Bakr, we are few: and Abu Bakr ceased not pressing until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) manifested: and the Muslims dispersed to the sides of the sanctuary, every man among his clan: and Abu Bakr rose among the people as a preacher, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sitting: and he was the first preacher who called to Allah and to His Messenger: and the polytheists rose against Abu Bakr and against the Muslims: and they were beaten in the sides of the sanctuary a severe beating: and Abu Bakr was trodden: and struck a severe striking: and the wicked Utbah ibn Rabi’a drew near him and kept striking him with two pointed sandals, turning them to his face: and he fell upon the belly of Abu Bakr until his face was not known from his nose: and Banu Taym came rescuing: and they pushed the polytheists from Abu Bakr: and Banu Taym carried Abu Bakr in a garment until they brought him to his house:

and they doubted not of his death: then Banu Taym returned and entered the sanctuary: and said: by Allah, if Abu Bakr dies we shall kill Utbah ibn Rabi’a: then they returned to Abu Bakr: and Abu Quhafa and Banu Taym began speaking to Abu Bakr until he answered: and he spoke at the end of the day: and said: what has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) done? And they touched him with their tongues and reproached him: then they rose: and said to his mother Umm al-Khayr: see that you feed him something, or give him drink: and when she was alone with him she pressed him, and he kept saying: what has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) done? She said: by Allah, I have no knowledge of your companion: He said: go to Umm Jamil bint al-Khattab and ask her of him: she went out until she came to Umm Jamil: and she said: Abu Bakr asks you of Muhammad ibn Abdallah: She said: I know not Abu Bakr, nor Muhammad ibn Abdallah: but if you wish I go with you to your son? She said: yes: and she went with her until she found Abu Bakr fallen, spent: and Umm Jamil drew near and cried aloud: and said: by Allah, a people who meted this to you are a people of wickedness and disbelief: and I hope Allah will avenge you: He said: what has the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) done?

She said: this is your mother hearing: He said: nothing upon you from her: She said: Salim, a pious servant: He said: where is he? She said: in the house of Ibn al-Arqam: He said: Allah has a claim upon me that I taste no food nor drink any drink, or come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and the two waited until the footfall quieted and the people stilled: and they went out with him leaning upon the two of them until they brought him upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) bent over him and kissed him: and the Muslims bent over him: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) felt for him a severe tenderness: Abu Bakr said: my father and mother be ransom, O Messenger of Allah, there is no harm in me but what the wicked gained of my face: and this is my mother, kind to her child: and you are blessed: call her to Allah: and invoke Allah for her, perhaps Allah will rescue her by you from the Fire: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) invoked for her and called her to Allah: and she accepted Islam: and they stayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the house a month: and they were thirty-nine men.

The Islam of Hamza and ’Umar: ’no council but I manifested faith in it’

And Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib had accepted Islam on the day Abu Bakr was beaten: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) invoked for ’Umar ibn al-Khattab and for Abu Jahl ibn Hisham: and ’Umar rose in the morning: and the invocation was on Wednesday: and ’Umar accepted Islam on Thursday: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people of the house magnified with a magnification heard in the heights of Mecca: and Abu l-Arqam went out, blind, a disbeliever, saying: O Allah forgive my sons except al-Arqam: for he has disbelieved. And ’Umar rose and said: O Messenger of Allah, upon what do we conceal our religion while we are upon the truth: and their religion manifests while they are upon falsehood? He said: O ’Umar, we are few: you have seen what we met: ’Umar said: by Him who sent you with the truth, no council I sat in with disbelief will remain but I manifest faith in it: then he went out and circumambulated the House: then passed by Quraysh as they awaited him: and Abu Jahl ibn Hisham said: so-and-so claims you have inclined: ’Umar said: I testify there is no god but Allah alone without partner: and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger: and the polytheists leapt upon him: and he leapt upon Utbah and fell upon him: and kept striking him:

and thrust his finger into his two eyes: and Utbah kept crying: and the people drew aside: and ’Umar rose and none ceased approaching him but he seized the noblest of whoever approached: until he frustrated the people: and he followed the councils he used to sit in, manifesting faith therein: then he turned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he was manifest over them: He said: my father and mother be your ransom, by Allah no council I used to sit in with disbelief remained but I manifested faith in it, unafraid and unapprehensive: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out: and ’Umar went out before him and Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib until he circumambulated the House and prayed the noon prayer openly: then he turned to the house of al-Arqam with ’Umar: then ’Umar departed alone: then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) departed. And the correct is that ’Umar only accepted Islam after the emigration of the Emigrants to the land of Abyssinia: and that in the sixth year of the mission: as will come in its place, Allah willing: and we sought out in detail the manner of the Islam of Abu Bakr and ’Umar (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in our book, their sira, each devoted to them: and expounded the word there: and to Allah the praise.

’A free man and a slave’: the fourth and the third of Islam

It is established in the Sahih of Muslim, from the hadith of Abu Umama, from Amr ibn ’Abasa as-Sulami: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at the first of his being sent while he was in Mecca: and he was then concealing himself: I said: what are you? He said: "I am a prophet." I said: and what is a prophet? He said: "the Messenger of Allah." I said: did Allah send you? He said: "yes." I said: with what did He send you? He said: "that you worship Allah alone without partner: and break the idols: and join the kinships." He said: I said: good is what He sent you with: and who is with you upon this? He said: "a free man and a slave": meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal: He said: Amr used to say: I was then the fourth of Islam: He said: so I accepted Islam: I said: shall I follow you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "no: but go to your people: and when you are informed that I have gone out, follow me." And it is said: the meaning of his word "a free man and a slave" is a genus name: and its interpretation by Abu Bakr and Bilal only calls for examination: for a company had accepted Islam before Amr ibn ’Abasa: and Zayd ibn Haritha had accepted Islam before Bilal also: so perhaps he informed that he was the fourth of Islam according to his knowledge: for the Muslims then concealed their Islam: and none but few of their kin knew their affair: leave alone strangers: leave the desert folk of the Bedouins: and Allah knows best.

And in the Sahih of al-Bukhari, through Abu Usama, from Hashim ibn Hashim, from Sa’id ibn al-Musayyab: I heard Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas say: none accepted Islam on the day I accepted it: and I remained seven days: and I am the third of Islam: As for his word: none accepted Islam on the day I accepted it: it is easy: and it is reported: except on the day I accepted it: and that is problematic: for it requires none preceded him in Islam: and it is known that the Siddiq, and Ali, and Khadija, and Zayd ibn Haritha accepted Islam before him: as the consensus related on the precedence of the Islam of these, each one: Ibn al-Athir: and Abu Hanifa, may Allah have mercy on him, stated: that each of these accepted Islam before the sons of his kind: and Allah knows best: and as for his word: and I remained seven days, and I am the third of Islam: it is problematic: and I know not upon what it is placed, except that he may have informed according to what he knew: and Allah knows best.

The milk of the ewe: the hadith of Ibn Mas’ud and the dream of Khalid ibn Sa’id

And Abu Dawud at-Tayalisi said: Hammad ibn Salama told us, from Asim, from Zirr, from Abdallah, who is Ibn Mas’ud: I was a young lad herding sheep for ’Uqba ibn Abi Mu’ayt in Mecca: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr came upon me, having fled from the polytheists: and he said, or they said: do you have, O lad, milk to give us drink? I said: I am a trustee: I give you not to drink: He said: is there with you a ewe the male has not yet mounted? I said: yes: so I brought it to them: and Abu Bakr held it: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the udder: and invoked: and the udder gathered: and Abu Bakr brought a hollowed rock: and he milked into it: then he drank, he and Abu Bakr: then they gave me drink: then he said to the udder: "gather": and it gathered: and afterward I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: teach me of this good speech, meaning the Quran: and he said: "you are a taught lad": and I took from his mouth seventy surahs none disputes with me: and thus Imam Ahmad reported it, from Affan, from Hammad ibn Salama: and al-Hasan ibn Arafa reported it, from Abu Bakr ibn ’Ayyash, from Asim ibn Abi an-Najud.

And al-Bayhaqi said: Abu Abdallah the hafiz informed us: Abu Abdallah Ibn Batta al-Isbahani told us, from al-Hasan ibn al-Jahm, from al-Husayn ibn al-Faraj, from Muhammad ibn Umar: Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid ibn az-Zubayr told me, from his father, or from Muhammad ibn Abdallah ibn Amr ibn Uthman: the Islam of Khalid ibn Sa’id ibn al-’As was early: and he was the first of his brothers to accept Islam: and the beginning of his Islam was that he saw in a dream that he was stood at the edge of the Fire: and he mentioned of its vastness what Allah knows best: and he saw in sleep as if a comer came to him pushing him into it: and he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taking hold of his two sides so he would not fall: and he started from his sleep: and he said: I swear by Allah this dream is of truth: and he met Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafa and mentioned that to him: and he said: good is intended by you: this is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): follow him: for you will follow him: and enter with him into Islam: and Islam will bar you from entering it:

and your father has fallen into it: and he met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was at Ajyad: and said: O Muhammad, toward what do you call? He said: "I call to Allah alone without partner: and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger: and you will cast off what you are upon of the worship of a stone that hears not: nor sees: nor harms: nor benefits: nor knows who worships it of those who worship it not." Khalid said: I bear witness there is no god but Allah: and I bear witness you are the Messenger of Allah: and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) rejoiced at his Islam: and Khalid vanished: and his father knew of his Islam: and sent seeking him: and he was brought: and he rebuked him: and struck him with a mace in his hand until he broke it upon his head: and said: by Allah I shall surely bar you the sustenance: Khalid said: and if you bar me, Allah provides me with what I live by: and he turned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): and he honored him: and he was with him.
