From the Arabic root ق-ب-ض (q-b-d, to seize or contract), قَابِض (qabid) is the active participle فَاعِل, the one who withholds or constricts by wisdom.
The Name “The Withholder” means: The One who withholds according to His wisdom and justice. It affirms a perfection belonging to Allah without defect, limit, or resemblance to creation. In al-Ghazali’s perspective, the believer never claims to share the divine attribute in its reality; instead, the Name gives an orientation suited to the condition of a servant.
Meditating on this Name calls the believer to seek lawful provision, share one's means, and never confuse created means with the true Provider. Knowledge of the Name thereby becomes worship, refinement of character, and trust in Allah alone.
