The makharij of the letters

Al-makharij: plural of makhraj, on the pattern maf'al, with fathah on the meem, sukoon on the kha' and fathah on the ra'.

In the language: the makhraj is the place of exit.

In the terminology: the name of the place from which the letter comes out and by which it is distinguished from the others, as madkhal is the name of the place of entry, and marqad the name of the place of rest.

The meaning of the makhraj and its usefulness

The makharij are for the letters what the scales are for the quantities: it is by them that one knows their measures, and thus they are distinguished from one another.
