📖 3 min readIt is that after the madd letter there is a hamzah joined to it in the same word.
Example of the alif: جَاءَ ¹; example of the waw: قُرُوءٍ ²; example of the ya': هَنِيئًا ³.
The obligation of lengthening it beyond the duration of the natural madd by consensus. And Imam Ibn al-Jazari reported in an-Nashr the statement: "I examined the qasr of the muttasil and did not find it in any authentic or deviant reading", then he said: "But I see the text with its madd"; and he mentions the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud when he was having a man recite and the man read: إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ ⁴ in cut form (that is, shortened), whereupon Ibn Mas'ud said: it is not thus that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had me recite it. The man said: how do you have me recite it, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman? He said: he had me recite it إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ lengthening it. Then Ibn al-Jazari said: this hadith is noble, a proof and a text in this chapter, the men of its chain being trustworthy⁵.
It is called madd muttasil (connected) for the joining of its cause (the hamzah) to the madd letter in the same word, as in the previous examples.
It is lengthened four harakat or five (in connection and at the stop) and six harakat are added at the stop if its hamzah is mutatarrifah.
And the muttasil with a mutatarrifah hamzah comes under three types, and the accomplished imam, author of "La'ali al-Bayan", indicated these three types and the permitted views in each type when it stands alone, by his statement:
And six are added, like for water, if he stops... and the raf' is ishmaam, absolutely, as is known; and the rawm with jarr, with that by which the connection was made... thus in its standing alone three [lengths] are permitted"
Follows the detailed exposition of the three types:
The first type: with an open hamzah, whether a fathah of i'rab like: وَالسَّمَاءَ ¹, or a fathah of structure like: جَاءَ ². When one stops on it, there are three views: the madd of four harakat, or five, or six, with the pure sukoon.
The second type: with a broken hamzah, whether a kasrah of i'rab like: وَالسَّمَاءِ ³, or a kasrah of structure like: هَؤُلاءِ ⁴. When one stops on it, there are five views: the madd of four harakat or five with the pure sukoon, and likewise with the rawm; for by these two views one joins as in connection, then the madd of six harakat with the pure sukoon only.
The third type: with a madmumah hamzah, whether a dammah of i'rab like: السُّفَهَاءُ ⁵, or a dammah of structure like: وَيَا سَمَاءُ ⁶. When one stops on it, there are eight views: the madd of four harakat, or five, or six, with the sukoon alone, and likewise with ishmaam, then the madd of four harakat or five with the rawm only⁷.
Surah 2, 20: Madd wajib muttasil: hamzah following the madd letter in the same word, madd of 4 or 5 harakat.
Surah 2, 87: Madd wajib muttasil: the hamzah follows the madd letter in the same word.
Surah 2, 5: Example from the book: madd wajib muttasil, the hamzah follows the waw of أول.
