The mutawaatir readings

They are the differences of mode in the recitation of the Quranic text revealed to our master Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), each one being attributed to the one who transmits it, their chain of transmission reaching back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). For greater clarity, the following terms must be known ¹.

The qira'ah (the reading)

It means the choice attributed to one of the ten imams concerning the mode of reciting the Quranic text according to what he received orally, his chain of transmission reaching back to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family). One says, for example: the qira'ah of 'Asim, the qira'ah of Nafi', and so on.

The riwayah (the transmission)

It means what is attributed to the one who transmits from one of the ten imams concerning the mode of his recitation of the Quranic text. To illustrate this: each of the imams of recitation has two transmitters (rawi), each of the two having chosen a transmission from that imam within his reading. That transmitter was thereby distinguished by it and it was attributed to him, and one says, for example: the riwayah of Hafs from 'Asim, the riwayah of Warsh from Nafi', and so on.

The tareeq (the path)

It is what is attributed to the one who conveys the riwayah of the transmitter (rawi), even if he stands low in the chain, as when one says: this is the riwayah of Warsh by the tareeq of al-Azraq.
