The classification of the sifat into strong and weak

The sifat are divided into two categories: strong sifat and weak sifat.

The strong sifat are eleven:

1. jahr; 2. shiddah; 3. isti'aalah; 4. itbaq; 5. safeer; 6. qalqalah; 7. inhiraaf; 8. takreer; 9. tafashshee; 10. istitaalah; 11. ghunnah.

The weak sifat are six:

1. hams; 2. rakhawah; 3. istifaal; 4. infitah; 5. leen; 6. khafaa.

There are sifat described by neither strength nor weakness, and they are three:

1. idhlaq; 2. ismat; 3. tawassut (the bayniya).

It is to this that the author of "La'ali al-Bayan" refers with his verses:

ضعيفها همس ورخو وخفا ... لين انفتاح واستفال عرفا

وما سواها وصفه بالقوة ... لا الذلق والإصمات والبَينِيَّة

"Its weak sifat are hams, rakhawah and khafaa... leen, infitah and istifaal, well known / and everything other than them is described by strength... no: idhlaq, ismat and the bayniya".
