The first type: the words on which the masaahif agreed on separation in every position

They are limited to six words, laid out as follows.

The first word: "أَنْ" with "لم"

"أَنْ", a hamza with fathah and a light noon, with "لم": it is separated by consensus of the masaahif, wherever it occurs in the Quran, as: ذَلِكَ أَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ رَبُّكَ مُهْلِكَ الْقُرَى بِظُلْمٍ ¹ (al-An'am), كَأَنْ لَمْ تَغْنَ بِالْأَمْس ² (Yunus), أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ ¹ (al-Balad), and other similar occurrences.

The second word: "عن" with the relative "من"

"عن" with the relative "من": it is separated by consensus of the masaahif, and that in two occurrences:

  1. The words of the Most High: فَيُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُ عَنْ مَنْ يَشَاءُ ² (an-Nur).
  2. The words of the Most High: فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَنْ تَوَلَّى عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا ³ (an-Najm). There is no other occurrence in the Quran.

The third word: "حيث" with "ما"

"حيث" with "ما": it is separated by consensus of the masaahif, in two occurrences:

  1. The words of the Most High: وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ ⁴, the first occurrence in surah al-Baqarah.
  2. The words of the Most High: وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ لِئَلاَّ ⁵, the second occurrence in the same surah. There is no other occurrence in the Quran.

The fourth word: "أَيًّا" with "ما"

"أَيًّا" with "ما": it is separated by consensus of the masaahif, and it occurs only in a single occurrence, the words of the Most High: أَيًّا مَا تَدْعُوا فَلَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى ⁶ (al-Isra').

There is divergence on this verse: the stop on "أيَّا" or on "ما"? The widespread opinion is that stopping is permitted on "أَيًّا" or on "ما" in case of necessity or examination, as Imam Ibn al-Jazari chose in an-Nashr. ⁷ But it is obligatory to begin with "أَيَّا". The author of La'ali al-Bayan alludes to it, saying:

.................................. ... كوقف أَيًّا مَا بأيا أو بما

The fifth word: "ابن" with "أم"

"ابن" with "أم": the masaahif were unanimous on the separation of the word "ابن" from "أم" in the words of the Most High: قَالَ ابْنَ أُمَّ إِنَّ الْقَوْمَ اسْتَضْعَفُونِي ⁸ (al-A'raf).

On this, stopping out of necessity or examination is permitted on each of "ابن" or "أم", but it is obligatory to begin with "ابن" and not with "أم".

The sixth word: "إِلْ" with "ياسين"

"إِلْ" with "ياسين" in the words of the Most High: سَلامٌ عَلَى إِلْ يَاسِينَ ¹ (as-Saffat). Hafs and those who follow him recited it with the kasrah of the hamza without Madd, with the sakina of the laam; the word is then one single word, although separated in writing, and it is not permitted to cut one of the two from the other, just as it is not permitted, by consensus, to follow the rasm in stopping on it. This expression has no equivalent in the Quran. ²

As for the one who recites "ءَالِ" with the fathah of the hamza, the kasrah of the laam and an alif between them, separating it from what follows: separation is then permitted by stopping, for necessity or examination. What is meant thereby is the descendants of Yasin and his companions. ³

To these rulings the author of La'ali al-Bayan alludes, saying:

وجاء إل ياسين بانفصال ... وصح وقف من تلاها آل
