Definition Alarthan

Alarthan according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

In the Mejelle (art. 702): taking the pledge (rahn). Ar-rahin: the one held bound. The one who gives the pledge. With the Ibadis: he who offers his money to another as security for the right the latter has against him. In the Mejelle (art. 703): the one who gave the pledge. Ar-rihan: venturing. Horse racing. Plural of rahn. Ar-rahn: detention. The pledged thing (plural rhun, rahan); in the Qur'an: 'if you are on a journey and find no scribe, let a pledge be taken (rihan maqbuda)' (al-Baqara, 283). In the Law: the property made security for a debt, to be satisfied from its price if payment cannot be obtained from the one owing it (Ibn Qudama). In the Mejelle (art. 702): detaining property and matching it against a right that may be satisfied from it; that property is called marhun and rahn.
