Al-brṭyl according to An-Nihaya (Ibn al-Athir)

A huge oblong stone, to which the she-camel's head was likened.

Al-brṭyl according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

With kasra of the ba: corruption; and in the proverb: al-baratil render victorious the abatil (falsehoods), from baratl, the pickaxe, because by it what is hidden is brought out; with fatha of the ba, vulgar usage for the loss of the folio with fatha.
