📖 2 min readNon-total insanity (junun ghayr al-mutbaq), according to the Hanafis: insanity that falls short of total (enveloping) insanity. Al-janin: the grave; the concealed thing; the child as long as it is in the womb of its mother: if it comes out alive it is a child (walad), and if it comes out dead it is a miscarried foetus (siqt). Al-Baji said: al-janin is what the woman expels and that is known to be a child, male or female, so long as it did not emit a cry. Plural: ajinnah. In the Noble Quran: 'Your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He knows you best since He produced you from the earth and when you were embryos in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves: He knows best who is God-fearing' (An-Najm, 32). Al-mijann: the shield (plural: mijan). Al-majnun: one who has lost his reason, or whose reason is corrupted (plural: majanin).
