Definition Al-ryḥ

Al-ryḥ according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

It is moving air, and it has various causes, for it may be a push from one side to another that occurs to it due to the accumulation of clouds and their crowding. And it may be due to the expansion of air through rarefaction in one direction and its push from another direction, so the expanded air pushes what is adjacent to it, and that adjacent one also pushes what is adjacent to it, causing the air to undulate, and that pushing weakens little by little until a limit where it stops. And it may be due to the condensation of air because when its volume decreases, the adjacent air moves in a direction due to the necessity of the impossibility of a void. And it may be due to the coldness of the smoke ascending to the freezing layer and its descent.

Al-ryḥ according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

In language: moving air between the heaven and the earth, and rih in the sense of scent: a property perceived by the sense of smell, it is said: "a pleasant scent". And it has been said: the name rih is only applied to the pleasant breeze. As for ra'iha: it is the breeze whether it is pleasant or foul, and its plural is: riyah, arwah, and arawih. The term riyah is used for mercy, and the term "rih" for punishment, and from this is the hadith: "O Allah, make it riyah and do not make it a rih".

Al-ryḥ according to Mu'jam Lughat al-Fuqaha

With a kasra on the first letter and a sukun on the second, plural aryah and riyah derived from raha, the moving air.
