Definition Al-ṭwfan

Al-ṭwfan according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Whatever was abundant or immense of things or events so as to overwhelm others; the great flood. It has been said: it is abundant death. It has been said: it occurs only in the story of the people of Pharaoh, while in the story of Noah (peace be upon him) it is water, without disagreement. (Al-Mu'jam al-Wasit, root tawf, 2/595 (Majma'); Fath al-Bari, p. 159.)

Al-ṭwfan according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

The overwhelming rain. The overwhelming water covering everything; in the Qur'an: 'We sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years save fifty; then the flood (at-tufan) seized them while they were wrongdoers' (al-'Ankabut, 14). Swift death.
