Definition Al-wsṭā

Al-wsṭā according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

A fa'la form from al-wasat; the wusta of the fingers is that between the index and the ring finger; the wusta of prayer is the middle one, or the most excellent of the prayers, from their calling the best 'the wusta'; on the first interpretation the command in the verse 'guard the prayers and the middle prayer (al-wusta)' stands so.
