The Sacred Precinct of Makkah (haram Makkah al-Mukarramah): what surrounds it on all its sides and encircles it. In the Noble Quran: 'Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which the fruits of everything are brought, a provision from Us? But most of them do not know' (Al-Qasas, 57). Al-harim: what has been made inviolable and must not be violated; the garment of the muhrim; what follows upon every thing and renders it sacrosanct, so that considerations and rights are forbidden regarding it; it has been so named because it forbids anyone other than its owner to dispose of it at will.
