Definition Qawm

Qawm according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Originally, verbal noun of qama yaqoumou: qualified by it, an embracing qualifier of males and females for their standing’s realization; then predominating men particularly, for their taking charge of women’ affairs, mentioned in al-Fa’iq. It fits this be the interpretation of qawm being plural of qa’im, as saoum plural of sa’im, else a verb not of the plural’s patterns: so in at-Talwih.

Qawm according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

The men’s group without the women; Allah said: « let not a people mock a people ».

Qawm according to Al-Qamus al-Fiqhi

The merchandise in estimating: its price and worth; in the noble hadith: « they said: O Messenger of Allah, wert thou to value it for us. He said: Allah is the Estimator », that is, wert thou pricing it, of the thing’s value’s domain: wert thou fixing the value. Of the thing: snatching it. Al-istiqama: balance. Perseverance. Straightness. In religion: a collective word seizing religion’s homes: standing before Allah in true sincerity and keeping the covenant; touching words, acts, states, intents, said al-Firouzabadi. Al-iqama: verbal noun. Prayer in the Law: informing of rising to it by specific mention, said al-Ba’ali. Qa’im of the sword: its hilt. Qa’im of the siesta: midday, the sun’s equinox state, called qa’im for the shadow showing not, as if standing. Al-qaima: the beasts’ single pillar. Of the sword: its hilt. Of eyes: she remaining in her place sound, having lost but her look and sight. Al-qawwam: the just; in the mighty Revelation: « and those who, when spending, neither squander nor hoard, holding between that balanced » (al-Fourqan 67). Of man: his stature and height’s beauty. Qiwam of the matter: its ordering and prop; said: so-and-so qawwam of his house’s people: he sustaining their affair. The posture standing by. What man keeps of sustenance. Al-qawm: the people’s group, men without women, no singular of its wording; in the mighty Quran: « O you who believe, let not a people mock a people, haply they better than them, nor women women, haply they better than them » (al-Houjourat 11); women may enter by subordination, masculine and feminine; plural aqwam. Of man: his peers gathering with him in one domain. Al-qiyam: verbal noun. Al-qiwam; in the mighty Quran: « give not the prodigals your wealth Allah made you sustaining: feed them and clothe them, speak them kindly » (an-Nisa 5).

Qawm according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

The men’s group particularly. Said: women enter by subordination; so named for their taking charge of great and weighty matters; masculine and feminine.

Qawm in the Quran

﴿وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنَّكُمْ ظَلَمْتُمْ أَنفُسَكُم بِٱتِّخَاذِكُمُ ٱلْعِجْلَ فَتُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ بَارِئِكُمْ فَٱقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ عِندَ بَارِئِكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلتَّوَّابُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

« And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. »

Surah البقرة : 54

﴿۞ وَإِذِ ٱسْتَسْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ فَقُلْنَا ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْحَجَرَ ۖ فَٱنفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًۭا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍۢ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ كُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ مِن رِّزْقِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

« And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption." »

Surah البقرة : 60

﴿وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تَذْبَحُوا۟ بَقَرَةًۭ ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًۭا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِٱللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

« And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant." »

Surah البقرة : 67

﴿وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ لَوْلَا يُكَلِّمُنَا ٱللَّهُ أَوْ تَأْتِينَآ ءَايَةٌۭ ۗ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّثْلَ قَوْلِهِمْ ۘ تَشَـٰبَهَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ ۗ قَدْ بَيَّنَّا ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لِقَوْمٍۢ يُوقِنُونَ

« Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith]. »

Surah البقرة : 118

﴿إِنَّ فِى خَلْقِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَـٰفِ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلَّتِى تَجْرِى فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنفَعُ ٱلنَّاسَ وَمَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن مَّآءٍۢ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَآبَّةٍۢ وَتَصْرِيفِ ٱلرِّيَـٰحِ وَٱلسَّحَابِ ٱلْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَعْقِلُونَ

« Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason. »

Surah البقرة : 164

﴿فَإِن طَلَّقَهَا فَلَا تَحِلُّ لَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدُ حَتَّىٰ تَنكِحَ زَوْجًا غَيْرَهُۥ ۗ فَإِن طَلَّقَهَا فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِمَآ أَن يَتَرَاجَعَآ إِن ظَنَّآ أَن يُقِيمَا حُدُودَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِ يُبَيِّنُهَا لِقَوْمٍۢ يَعْلَمُونَ

« And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him. And if the latter husband divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon the woman and her former husband for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allah. These are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear to a people who know. »
