The path of guidance to which He called; in the Qur'an: 'spend in God's path and do not cast yourselves by your own hands into ruin; do good, for God loves the doers of good' (al-Baqara, 195). The verse's import is the command to spend in God's path in all forms of nearness and obedience, especially directing money to fighting the enemies and devoting it to what strengthens the Muslims against their foe; and the information that abstaining from that is perdition and destruction. Jihad: this meaning is its most common customary and legal usage.

Jihad, hajj, and seeking knowledge refer back to 'in God's path.' In (the work) 'al-Mudammarat': though it embraces every act of obedience, it is particularized to raiding (al-ghazw) when used absolutely.
