Lexically: schooling and purifying; hence the tanqih of poetry, its schooling and purifying of what has no place in the subject; and tanqih al-manat. Manat: the name of the place of attachment; ina: suspension; said: he suspended the thing. Manat: the efficient cause. Tanqih of manat among usulists: schooling the efficient cause and purifying it by nulling what suits not justification and retaining what suits. Its example: the Bedouin’s tale of intercourse by day of Ramadan: in some versions he came beating his breast, plucking his hair, saying: I am lost, I lay with my wife by day of Ramadan; the Prophet said: free a slave. His being Bedouin, beating his breast, plucking his hair, the woman being his wife: descriptions suiting not causality, to null for purifying the cause: cleansing it of what mingled in un-efficiently. It is also attaching the branch to the root by nulling the differentiator, saying: no difference between root and branch save so-and-so, that having no part in the ruling at all, their sharing the ruling following their sharing its cause. Its example: analogy of the slave upon the freed one in the portion of manumission, saying no difference…
