📖 2 min readTo take refuge with him: to hold him as a refuge and cling to Him. Al-isti'adha: the seeking of protection. In prayer, according to the Hanafis, the Shafi'is and the Hanbalis: that the worshipper say: 'I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed devil.' Al-'a'idh: active participle. The she-camel having milk. (plural) 'udh. Al-'awdh: the refuge. Al-'udha: the amulet. (plural) 'udh. The ruqya (incantation) by which one treats a man from panic or madness. Al-'iyadh: the seeking of refuge. Al-ma'adh: the refuge. One says: ma'adh Allah (Allah forbid), that is: I seek refuge with Allah from it; it is used as a substitute for the verbal expression, being a verbal noun though rarely employed, like subhana Allah. In the Quran: [Yusuf, 79: 'He said: Allah forbid that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our goods; then we would be unjust.'], that is: we take refuge in Him and seek His protection from doing that. Al-mu'awwidhatan: the two suras al-Falaq and al-Nas of the Quran, because they protect their reciter: they preserve him from every evil.
