Definition Thana

Thana according to Dustur al-'Ulama (Al-Ahmadnagari)

Recalling good by tongue; but in hamd’s definition the tongue cut, detached, its definition needing not adding it is thana’ by tongue etc. In at-Tajrid, signal of tongue’s shortness praising Him: hamd, all its kinds, specified His nearness; tongue cannot praise Him fitting His presence. (The tongue fails describing thy grace.) And the best of prophets’ word: « I cannot count on Thee praise, Thou as Thou praised Thyself » attests this aim. Said: thana’ an act feeling a thing’s veneration; among jurists: « purity to Thee, O Allah, and by Thy praise; blessed Thy name, exalted Thy majesty, no god but Thee ». In funeral prayer: « purity to Thee, O Allah, and by Thy praise; blessed Thy name, exalted Thy majesty, glorious Thy praise, no god but Thee ».

Thana according to Mu'jam al-Mustalahat al-Fiqhiyya

Lexically: praise, what is recalled of people’s virtues, praising state by state; taken of thani, the apposition, whence ithnayn, one apposed to other; thana’: apposing virtues in praise. Thana’ on Allah: describing Him His laudable attributes and thanking Him the great favor; thana’ may be by ill too, as related: « passing a funeral, they praised it well; the Prophet said: obligatory, then… »

Thana according to At-Tawqif (Al-Munawi)

What is recalled of people’s virtues praising state by state; thani’s origin the apposition, whence ithnayn, one apposing other; thana’ apposing virtues in praise; exception apposing second on first excluding it. Some say (as ar-Raghib al-Isfahani in al-Moufradat): thani and ithnayn root this word’s derivatives, said regarding the number, or the repetition in it, or both together.

Thana according to At-Ta'rifat al-Fiqhiyya (Al-Barkati)

Praise and recalling good by tongue. As-Sayyid said: « thana’ of a thing is an act feeling its veneration ».
