📖 2 min readWith a thing: to play with it. Al-lahat: the uvula, the flesh extending towards the throat at the far end of the mouth. (plural) lahawat, lahiyat, lahi and laha'. Al-lahw: that with which one plays, and what diverts one by passion and delight, or the like. In the Quran: [Luqman, 6: 'And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk to lead men astray from the way of Allah without knowledge, and takes it in mockery: for them is a humiliating punishment.']. Ibn Mas'ud said: it is, by Allah, singing; likewise Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Ikrima, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid and Mak-hul. Ibn Jarir said: it is every speech that turns aside from the signs of Allah and the following of His way. The woman with whom one amuses oneself. The drum and the like. Al-lahwa: the gift, of whatever kind. (plural) al-laha. What the miller casts by hand into the mill of grain. Al-malha: the playground. One says: this is the malhi of the people: their place of residence. (plural) malahi. The time of diversion and its place. Al-malahi: the instruments of diversion.
