بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Verse 1 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

The Prophet frowned and turned away

عَبَسَ ʿabasa He frowned
وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ watawallā and turned away

Verse 2 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ

Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

أَن an Because
جَآءَهُ jāahu came to him
ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ l-aʿmā the blind man

Verse 3 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ

But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified

وَمَا wamā But what
يُدْرِيكَ yud'rīka would make you know
لَعَلَّهُۥ laʿallahu that he might
يَزَّكَّىٰٓ yazzakkā purify himself

Verse 4 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ

Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

أَوْ aw Or
يَذَّكَّرُ yadhakkaru be reminded
فَتَنفَعَهُ fatanfaʿahu so would benefit him
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ l-dhik'rā the reminder

Verse 5 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

As for he who thinks himself without need,

أَمَّا ammā As for
مَنِ mani (him) who
ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ is'taghnā considers himself free from need

Verse 6 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

To him you give attention.

فَأَنتَ fa-anta So you
لَهُۥ lahu to him
تَصَدَّىٰ taṣaddā give attention

Verse 7 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

وَمَا wamā And not
عَلَيْكَ ʿalayka upon you
أَلَّا allā that not
يَزَّكَّىٰ yazzakkā he purifies himself

Verse 8 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

وَأَمَّا wa-ammā But as for
مَن man (he) who
جَآءَكَ jāaka came to you
يَسْعَىٰ yasʿā striving

Verse 9 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

While he fears [Allah],

وَهُوَ wahuwa While he
يَخْشَىٰ yakhshā fears

Verse 10 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

From him you are distracted.

فَأَنتَ fa-anta But you
عَنْهُ ʿanhu from him
تَلَهَّىٰ talahhā (are) distracted

Verse 11 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌۭ

No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;

كَلَّآ kallā Nay
إِنَّهَا innahā Indeed, it
تَذْكِرَةٌۭ tadhkiratun (is) a reminder

Verse 12 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

So whoever wills may remember it.

فَمَن faman So whosoever
شَآءَ shāa wills
ذَكَرَهُۥ dhakarahu may remember it

Verse 13 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فِى صُحُفٍۢ مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ

[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

فِى fī In
صُحُفٍۢ ṣuḥufin sheets
مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ mukarramatin honored

Verse 14 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ

Exalted and purified,

مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ marfūʿatin Exalted
مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ muṭahharatin purified

Verse 15 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍۢ

[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

بِأَيْدِى bi-aydī In (the) hands
سَفَرَةٍۢ safaratin (of) scribes

Verse 16 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍۢ

Noble and dutiful.

كِرَامٍۭ kirāmin Noble
بَرَرَةٍۢ bararatin dutiful

Verse 17 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ

Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.

قُتِلَ qutila Is destroyed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ l-insānu [the] man
مَآ mā how
أَكْفَرَهُۥ akfarahu ungrateful is he

Verse 18 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

From what substance did He create him?

مِنْ min From
أَىِّ ayyi what
شَىْءٍ shayin thing
خَلَقَهُۥ khalaqahu He created him

Verse 19 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

مِن min From
نُّطْفَةٍ nuṭ'fatin a semen-drop
خَلَقَهُۥ khalaqahu He created him
فَقَدَّرَهُۥ faqaddarahu then He proportioned him

Verse 20 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

Then He eased the way for him;

ثُمَّ thumma Then
ٱلسَّبِيلَ l-sabīla the way
يَسَّرَهُۥ yassarahu He made easy for him

Verse 21 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ

Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

ثُمَّ thumma Then
أَمَاتَهُۥ amātahu He causes him to die
فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ fa-aqbarahu and provides a grave for him

Verse 22 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

ثُمَّ thumma Then
إِذَا idhā when
شَآءَ shāa He wills
أَنشَرَهُۥ ansharahu He will resurrect him

Verse 23 - Surah Abasa: 5 words

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

كَلَّا kallā Nay
لَمَّا lammā Not
يَقْضِ yaqḍi he has accomplished
مَآ mā what
أَمَرَهُۥ amarahu He commanded him

Verse 24 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

Then let mankind look at his food -

فَلْيَنظُرِ falyanẓuri Then let look
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ l-insānu the man
إِلَىٰ ilā at
طَعَامِهِۦٓ ṭaʿāmihi his food

Verse 25 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّۭا

How We poured down water in torrents,

اَنَّا annā That [We]
صَبَبْنَا ṣababnā [We] poured
ٱلْمَآءَ l-māa the water
صَبًّۭا ṣabban (in) abundance

Verse 26 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّۭا

Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

ثُمَّ thumma Then
شَقَقْنَا shaqaqnā We cleaved
ٱلْأَرْضَ l-arḍa the earth
شَقًّۭا shaqqan splitting

Verse 27 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّۭا

And caused to grow within it grain

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا fa-anbatnā Then We caused to grow
فِيهَا fīhā therein
حَبًّۭا ḥabban grain

Verse 28 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَعِنَبًۭا وَقَضْبًۭا

And grapes and herbage

وَعِنَبًۭا waʿinaban And grapes
وَقَضْبًۭا waqaḍban and green fodder

Verse 29 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَزَيْتُونًۭا وَنَخْلًۭا

And olive and palm trees

وَزَيْتُونًۭا wazaytūnan And olive
وَنَخْلًۭا wanakhlan and date-palms

Verse 30 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًۭا

And gardens of dense shrubbery

وَحَدَآئِقَ waḥadāiqa And gardens
غُلْبًۭا ghul'ban (of) thick foliage

Verse 31 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭ وَأَبًّۭا

And fruit and grass -

وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭ wafākihatan And fruits
وَأَبًّۭا wa-abban and grass

Verse 32 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

مَّتَـٰعًۭا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ

[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.

مَّتَـٰعًۭا matāʿan (As) a provision
لَّكُمْ lakum for you
وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ wali-anʿāmikum and for your cattle

Verse 33 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

But when there comes the Deafening Blast

فَإِذَا fa-idhā But when
جَآءَتِ jāati comes
ٱلصَّآخَّةُ l-ṣākhatu the Deafening Blast

Verse 34 - Surah Abasa: 5 words

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

On the Day a man will flee from his brother

يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day
يَفِرُّ yafirru will flee
ٱلْمَرْءُ l-maru a man
مِنْ min from
أَخِيهِ akhīhi his brother

Verse 35 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ

And his mother and his father

وَأُمِّهِۦ wa-ummihi And his mother
وَأَبِيهِ wa-abīhi and his father

Verse 36 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ

And his wife and his children,

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ waṣāḥibatihi And his wife
وَبَنِيهِ wabanīhi and his children

Verse 37 - Surah Abasa: 6 words

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ شَأْنٌۭ يُغْنِيهِ

For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

لِكُلِّ likulli For every
ٱمْرِئٍۢ im'ri-in man
مِّنْهُمْ min'hum among them
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ yawma-idhin that Day
شَأْنٌۭ shanun (will be) a matter
يُغْنِيهِ yugh'nīhi occupying him

Verse 38 - Surah Abasa: 3 words

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ

[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

وُجُوهٌۭ wujūhun Faces
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ yawma-idhin that Day
مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ mus'firatun (will be) bright

Verse 39 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

ضَاحِكَةٌۭ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ

Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

ضَاحِكَةٌۭ ḍāḥikatun Laughing
مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ mus'tabshiratun rejoicing at good news

Verse 40 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

وَوُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌۭ

And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

وَوُجُوهٌۭ wawujūhun And faces
يَوْمَئِذٍ yawma-idhin that Day
عَلَيْهَا ʿalayhā upon them
غَبَرَةٌۭ ghabaratun (will be) dust

Verse 41 - Surah Abasa: 2 words

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

Blackness will cover them.

تَرْهَقُهَا tarhaquhā Will cover them
قَتَرَةٌ qataratun darkness

Verse 42 - Surah Abasa: 4 words

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ

Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those
هُمُ humu [they]
ٱلْكَفَرَةُ l-kafaratu (are) the disbelievers
ٱلْفَجَرَةُ l-fajaratu the wicked ones

God and His angels shower their blessings on the Prophet. O believers, you should also send your blessings on him, and salute him with a worthy greeting.
