The Quran contains 6,236 verses and 77,429 words. The Quran word by word lets you discover them one by one: each verse is presented in Arabic, broken down into words, with the transliteration and meaning of each word. A simple and effective method to memorize the Quran, understand what you recite in prayer and learn the Arabic of the Quran, word after word.

Reciting without understanding is praying in a language you do not hear. Word by word changes that: instead of reading a verse as one block, you see it break down into units of meaning. The word ٱلْحَمْدُ is no longer a sound but "all praise", and ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ becomes "the Most Gracious". In a few sessions, the surahs you recite most become transparent.
This is the method of traditional Quranic schools: learning starts word by word, not verse by verse. It requires no prerequisites: no need to know how to read Arabic, the Latin transliteration guides your pronunciation, and the meaning does the rest. Each word you learn then comes back in dozens of other verses, as the Quran repeats its core vocabulary: the 77,429 words of the text boil down to a few thousand distinct words.
Each surah has its own page: the complete Arabic text, the English translation of every verse, and the word-by-word breakdown of the whole surah, from Al-Faatiha to An-Naas.
Open the page of your surah, preferably a short one if you are a beginner. For each verse, follow the same order: read the whole verse in Arabic, read it again with its translation, then go through the words one by one with their transliteration and meaning. Finish by reciting the whole verse without looking. Three passes are usually enough for a verse to stick.
Every word is also clickable inside the online Quran reader, with audio recitation of each word.
