بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Verse 1 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍۢ وَاقِعٍۢ

A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen

سَأَلَ sa-ala Asked
سَآئِلٌۢ sāilun a questioner
بِعَذَابٍۢ biʿadhābin about a punishment
وَاقِعٍۢ wāqiʿin bound to happen

Verse 2 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌۭ

To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ lil'kāfirīna To the disbelievers
لَيْسَ laysa not
لَهُۥ lahu of it
دَافِعٌۭ dāfiʿun any preventer

Verse 3 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ

[It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent.

مِّنَ mina From
ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah
ذِى dhī Owner
ٱلْمَعَارِجِ l-maʿāriji (of) the ways of ascent

Verse 4 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 11 words

تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍۢ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍۢ

The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.

تَعْرُجُ taʿruju Ascend
ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ l-malāikatu the Angels
وَٱلرُّوحُ wal-rūḥu and the Spirit
إِلَيْهِ ilayhi to Him
فِى fī in
يَوْمٍۢ yawmin a Day
كَانَ kāna [is]
مِقْدَارُهُۥ miq'dāruhu its measure
خَمْسِينَ khamsīna (is) fifty
أَلْفَ alfa thousand
سَنَةٍۢ sanatin year(s)

Verse 5 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 3 words

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًۭا جَمِيلًا

So be patient with gracious patience.

فَٱصْبِرْ fa-iṣ'bir So be patient
صَبْرًۭا ṣabran a patience
جَمِيلًا jamīlan good

Verse 6 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 3 words

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًۭا

Indeed, they see it [as] distant,

إِنَّهُمْ innahum Indeed, they
يَرَوْنَهُۥ yarawnahu see it
بَعِيدًۭا baʿīdan (as) far off

Verse 7 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًۭا

But We see it [as] near.

وَنَرَىٰهُ wanarāhu But We see it
قَرِيبًۭا qarīban near

Verse 8 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ

On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,

يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day
تَكُونُ takūnu will be
ٱلسَّمَآءُ l-samāu the sky
كَٱلْمُهْلِ kal-muh'li like molten copper

Verse 9 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 3 words

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ

And the mountains will be like wool,

وَتَكُونُ watakūnu And will be
ٱلْجِبَالُ l-jibālu the mountains
كَٱلْعِهْنِ kal-ʿih'ni like wool

Verse 10 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًۭا

And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,

وَلَا walā And not
يَسْـَٔلُ yasalu will ask
حَمِيمٌ ḥamīmun a friend
حَمِيمًۭا ḥamīman (about) a friend

Verse 11 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 9 words

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ

They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ yubaṣṣarūnahum They will be made to see each other
يَوَدُّ yawaddu Would wish
ٱلْمُجْرِمُ l-muj'rimu the criminal
لَوْ law if
يَفْتَدِى yaftadī he (could be) ransomed
مِنْ min from
عَذَابِ ʿadhābi (the) punishment
يَوْمِئِذٍۭ yawmi-idhin (of) that Day
بِبَنِيهِ bibanīhi by his children

Verse 12 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ

And his wife and his brother

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ waṣāḥibatihi And his spouse
وَأَخِيهِ wa-akhīhi and his brother

Verse 13 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 3 words

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ

And his nearest kindred who shelter him

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ wafaṣīlatihi And his nearest kindred
ٱلَّتِى allatī who
تُـْٔوِيهِ tu'wīhi sheltered him

Verse 14 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 6 words

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ

And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.

وَمَن waman And whoever
فِى fī (is) on
ٱلْأَرْضِ l-arḍi the earth
جَمِيعًۭا jamīʿan all
ثُمَّ thumma then
يُنجِيهِ yunjīhi it (could) save him

Verse 15 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 3 words

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ

No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],

كَلَّآ ۖ kallā By no means
إِنَّهَا innahā Indeed, it (is)
لَظَىٰ laẓā surely a Flame of Hell

Verse 16 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

نَزَّاعَةًۭ لِّلشَّوَىٰ

A remover of exteriors.

نَزَّاعَةًۭ nazzāʿatan A remover
لِّلشَّوَىٰ lilshawā of the skin of the head

Verse 17 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]

تَدْعُوا۟ tadʿū Inviting
مَنْ man (him) who
أَدْبَرَ adbara turned his back
وَتَوَلَّىٰ watawallā and went away

Verse 18 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ

And collected [wealth] and hoarded.

وَجَمَعَ wajamaʿa And collected
فَأَوْعَىٰٓ fa-awʿā and hoarded

Verse 19 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

۞ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا

Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

۞ إِنَّ inna Indeed
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insāna the man
خُلِقَ khuliqa was created
هَلُوعًا halūʿan anxious

Verse 20 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًۭا

When evil touches him, impatient,

إِذَا idhā When
مَسَّهُ massahu touches him
ٱلشَّرُّ l-sharu the evil
جَزُوعًۭا jazūʿan distressed

Verse 21 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا

And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when
مَسَّهُ massahu touches him
ٱلْخَيْرُ l-khayru the good
مَنُوعًا manūʿan withholding

Verse 22 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

Except the observers of prayer -

إِلَّا illā Except
ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ l-muṣalīna those who pray

Verse 23 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ

Those who are constant in their prayer

ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those who
هُمْ hum [they]
عَلَىٰ ʿalā at
صَلَاتِهِمْ ṣalātihim their prayer
دَآئِمُونَ dāimūna (are) constant

Verse 24 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّۭ مَّعْلُومٌۭ

And those within whose wealth is a known right

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
فِىٓ fī in
أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ amwālihim their wealth
حَقٌّۭ ḥaqqun (is) a right
مَّعْلُومٌۭ maʿlūmun known

Verse 25 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 2 words

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ

For the petitioner and the deprived -

لِّلسَّآئِلِ lilssāili For the one who asks
وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ wal-maḥrūmi and the deprived

Verse 26 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

And those who believe in the Day of Recompense

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
يُصَدِّقُونَ yuṣaddiqūna accept (the) truth
بِيَوْمِ biyawmi (of the) Day
ٱلدِّينِ l-dīni (of) the Judgment

Verse 27 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 6 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ

And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
هُم hum [they]
مِّنْ min of
عَذَابِ ʿadhābi (the) punishment
رَبِّهِم rabbihim (of) their Lord
مُّشْفِقُونَ mush'fiqūna (are) fearful

Verse 28 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍۢ

Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -

إِنَّ inna Indeed
عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (the) punishment
رَبِّهِمْ rabbihim (of) your Lord
غَيْرُ ghayru (is) not
مَأْمُونٍۢ mamūnin to be felt secure (of)

Verse 29 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ

And those who guard their private parts

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
هُمْ hum [they]
لِفُرُوجِهِمْ lifurūjihim their modesty
حَـٰفِظُونَ ḥāfiẓūna (are) guardians

Verse 30 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 10 words

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -

إِلَّا illā Except
عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā from
أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ azwājihim their spouses
أَوْ aw or
مَا mā what
مَلَكَتْ malakat they possess
أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ aymānuhum rightfully
فَإِنَّهُمْ fa-innahum then indeed, they
غَيْرُ ghayru (are) not
مَلُومِينَ malūmīna blameworthy

Verse 31 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 7 words

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ

But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -

فَمَنِ famani But whoever
ٱبْتَغَىٰ ib'taghā seeks
وَرَآءَ warāa beyond
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that
فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those
هُمُ humu [they]
ٱلْعَادُونَ l-ʿādūna (are) the transgressors

Verse 32 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ

And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
هُمْ hum [they]
لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ li-amānātihim of their trusts
وَعَهْدِهِمْ waʿahdihim and their promise
رَٰعُونَ rāʿūna (are) observers

Verse 33 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ

And those who are in their testimonies upright

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
هُم hum [they]
بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ bishahādātihim in their testimonies
قَآئِمُونَ qāimūna stand firm

Verse 34 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ

And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:

وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who
هُمْ hum [they]
عَلَىٰ ʿalā on
صَلَاتِهِمْ ṣalātihim their prayer
يُحَافِظُونَ yuḥāfiẓūna keep a guard

Verse 35 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 4 words

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ مُّكْرَمُونَ

They will be in gardens, honored.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those
فِى fī (will be) in
جَنَّـٰتٍۢ jannātin Gardens
مُّكْرَمُونَ muk'ramūna honored

Verse 36 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ

So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],

فَمَالِ famāli So what is with
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who
كَفَرُوا۟ kafarū disbelieve
قِبَلَكَ qibalaka before you
مُهْطِعِينَ muh'ṭiʿīna (they) hasten

Verse 37 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ

[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?

عَنِ ʿani On
ٱلْيَمِينِ l-yamīni the right
وَعَنِ waʿani and on
ٱلشِّمَالِ l-shimāli the left
عِزِينَ ʿizīna (in) separate groups

Verse 38 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 8 words

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍۢ

Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?

أَيَطْمَعُ ayaṭmaʿu Does long
كُلُّ kullu every
ٱمْرِئٍۢ im'ri-in person
مِّنْهُمْ min'hum among them
أَن an that
يُدْخَلَ yud'khala he enters
جَنَّةَ jannata a Garden
نَعِيمٍۢ naʿīmin (of) Delight

Verse 39 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 5 words

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.

كَلَّآ ۖ kallā By no means
إِنَّا innā Indeed, We
خَلَقْنَـٰهُم khalaqnāhum [We] have created them
مِّمَّا mimmā from what
يَعْلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna they know

Verse 40 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 7 words

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ

So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able

فَلَآ falā But nay
أُقْسِمُ uq'simu I swear
بِرَبِّ birabbi by (the) Lord
ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ l-mashāriqi (of) the risings
وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ wal-maghāribi and the settings
إِنَّا innā that We
لَقَـٰدِرُونَ laqādirūna (are) surely Able

Verse 41 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 8 words

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًۭا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā [On]
أَن an to
نُّبَدِّلَ nubaddila [We] replace
خَيْرًۭا khayran (with) better
مِّنْهُمْ min'hum than them
وَمَا wamā and not
نَحْنُ naḥnu We
بِمَسْبُوقِينَ bimasbūqīna (are) to be outrun

Verse 42 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 8 words

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ

So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -

فَذَرْهُمْ fadharhum So leave them
يَخُوضُوا۟ yakhūḍū (to) converse vainly
وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ wayalʿabū and amuse themselves
حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until
يُلَـٰقُوا۟ yulāqū they meet
يَوْمَهُمُ yawmahumu their Day
ٱلَّذِى alladhī which
يُوعَدُونَ yūʿadūna they are promised

Verse 43 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 9 words

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًۭا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍۢ يُوفِضُونَ

The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.

يَوْمَ yawma (The) Day
يَخْرُجُونَ yakhrujūna they will come out
مِنَ mina from
ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ l-ajdāthi the graves
سِرَاعًۭا sirāʿan rapidly
كَأَنَّهُمْ ka-annahum as if they (were)
إِلَىٰ ilā to
نُصُبٍۢ nuṣubin a goal
يُوفِضُونَ yūfiḍūna hastening

Verse 44 - Surah Al-Ma'aarij: 9 words

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.

خَـٰشِعَةً khāshiʿatan Humbled
أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ abṣāruhum their eyesights
تَرْهَقُهُمْ tarhaquhum will cover them
ذِلَّةٌۭ ۚ dhillatun humiliation
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That
ٱلْيَوْمُ l-yawmu (is) the Day
ٱلَّذِى alladhī which
كَانُوا۟ kānū they were
يُوعَدُونَ yūʿadūna promised

God and His angels shower their blessings on the Prophet. O believers, you should also send your blessings on him, and salute him with a worthy greeting.

Al-Ahzab 33:56
